I get this every year when the squits - sorry, second form - have their first music lesson in the music library..."Josh, why is there a painting of you in the music library?"

Re: Constant Lambert
How strange.
When I met the a-fore mentioned Tolkien enthusiast last year, face to face, I kept wondering where I'd seen him before, apart from that TV programme.
The picture answers that question. And there was I, delving into the realms of deja vue, so to speak !

Re: Constant Lambert
Can someone please enlighten me - I'd assumed the breeches went over the yellow socks so that there wasn't a cold gap around the knees. Have I been wrong in my thinking?

Re: Constant Lambert
I think that all depended on the length of your legs, Katharine !
Me being tall, I did have a gap in my last years.
(No funnies, perleeeez !!)

Looking at the painting and Josh's avatar there does seem to be a resemblance..

Re: Constant Lambert
Socks go under the breeches but as the roll down quite easily its very possible to get a gap of bare flesh

Re: Constant Lambert
Re the bare knees: while it's true that the breeches could often bare the knees like this, I was always surprised that the artist didn't correct this discreetly.

Re: Constant Lambert
Josh (Eruresto), who a couple of years ago was the star of a reality show shot at CH whereby Gene Simmons (of rock band KISS) was given the task of turning 'classically trained young musicians' into a rock band. The TV show was on chennel 4 and was entitled "Rock School". Josh became the lead singer, cast against type but IMO he made an excellent job of it.michael scuffil wrote:Re the bare knees: while it's true that the breeches could often bare the knees like this, I was always surprised that the artist didn't correct this discreetly.

Re: Constant Lambert
In the picture the breeches seem to end well above the knee. When I was there the breeches ended below the knee (the highest button was at mid kneecap level) so they comfortably covered the tops of the socks (which were held up with elastic garters). Because the breeches were reasonably loose they were not uncomfortable and the skin certainly didn't show.Alan P5age wrote:It was painted by his father apparently. I assume it was a pretty informal sitting and the portrait was probably not intended for public show.
I am in no position to know but I would think it would have been very uncomfortable to sit for a lengthy period with the socks tucked under the breeches. Perhaps C.L. felt more inclined to sit still like this.
I suspect that when the painting was done the breeches were shorter or tighter.

Re: Constant Lambert
i think breeches may have got shorter, however the lowness over the bum that some ofthe boys wore them meant that they were actually around their ankles

Re: Constant Lambert
Do none of you remember being 12/13 or do you not have offspring of that age? Breeches that in September were below the knee could well be above the knee by the following June.
I once nursed a 14 year old lad who had fractured a femur and during the eight weeks he was in bed he grew 3 inches and 2 shoe sizes.
When his Mum brought his clothes in for him to go home she had to go and buy him a whole new outfit.
