We have done this before

Post by englishangel »

I know there is a thread somewhwere with Useful information but I can't find it, if anyone wants to and JT can merge it go ahead.

I received this from my Neighbourhood Watch Office but thought I would disseminate it further.

I do this, I have my numbers stored as
ICE Husband mobile
ICE Husband work
ICE sister
ICE son

Home and MumDad are pretty obvious.

Mary

We all carry our mobile phones with names and numbers stored in its memory but nobody other than ourselves know which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.

If you were involved in an accident or taken ill, people attending would have your mobile phone but not know who to contact. "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) has become a nationally recognised name for this purpose.

All you need to do is store the number of a contact person under the name "ICE". If you have more than one contact simply enter ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc. Emergency personnel would then be able to contact the right person by simply dialling the number you have stored as "ICE".

It's just a small point, and maybe it's to do with the age of my phone, but I found if you store the same number with two different names (eg "husband" and "ICE"), the phone just displays the number when that person calls, because it doesn't know which of the two names to display. I also lost the special ringtone I had set up for my parter, again because it was just associated with his name and I forgot to associate it with the number as "ICE" (if any of that makes sense!).

It took me ages to work out what had happened, and why I no longer got my partner's name and ringtone when he called me. Now, to avoid it happening again, I've introduced another step into the process, which hopefully doesn't complicate things too much. I have stored "ICE=Chris" as a phrase, with no number attached, and if necessary the emergency services can then find Chris's name and make the call that way.

Just in case anyone else tries the same thing and can't puzzle out what's going on!!

I have never used mine either. Though perhaps I shouldn't say that, as I said on Friday that none of us had been unwell this winter, my husband promptly spent the weekend in bed and passed his bug onto me.

I am nearly better thank you

My phone also won't take the the same number for two names so I have ICE-Husband, which is not going to be much use if we are in the same accident, so I have ICE-son and ICE-sister as well.

My wife has a very strong view about anything which I have:

and then gets all grumpy if I get a cough in case she gets it

A health website for the lads. I found this from a BBC link and knowing the demographic here thought it would be good to put it on.

this whole ICE thing came to mind over the weekend, i was watching some awful prgramme on sky when one person was injured and a stander by just poicked up there phone pressed a button and got hold of the husband! Now unless this person had their husband in their phone as husband/hubby how would the stranger know thats who to call.I have to admit i have often thought this in films' prgrammes-how they magically knopw who to call and always get hold of them first time

Doing a bit of research for Maria Grogan I found a Marc Laurence from Finland when he did a pilgrimage in Aquitaine years ago. However, the article in a French publication for pilgrims, emphasised exactly what Jo has written above to the exctent that it is very close to what she has written including the numbers . Apparently ICE is now understood and looked for by the rescue services in many countries; you don't need a French /German/..... equivalent.

I do this, but also begin it with an asterisk (so *ICE), so that it always appears at the top of my address book.

Great idea Josh.

A couple of years ago I left my phone on a wash-basin in the ladies at the races and the last call I had made was to MumDad. My Mum was very surprised when she got a call from Doncaster saying that they had found my phone, but she was a sensible lady, realised where I was and told them to ring my husband, who of course was sitting next to me.

My husband has 2 mobile phones, a general work number and a private work number which I would only call in the direst emergency, so I have sorted them according to priority.
