I don't understand.... admittedly I'm not overly familiar with the Horsham site, but was there in June, and am looking at it on Google Earth right now. There is a path alongside the road in front of the houses - surely this isn't what you mean? It looks like the most obvious route along the front of the houses - which other way would you go, and how would that make it quicker to get from house to the Dining Hall or Chapel?

There is a narrower path immediately adjacent to the buildings of The Avenue and this and the main path are separated by lawns.

The Button Grecian path referred to is the narrow one. It is quicker because you arrive closer to Dining Hall than you would by taking the main path and then turning to walk to Dining Hall. In reality we are probably talking about saving the length of a cricket pitch or so in terms of distance but you can also proceed faster as you don't have to pick a way through the riff-raff!

I hasten to add I was always riff-raff.

It had nothing to do with saving time or avoiding crowds (being narrow, the Grecians' Path could get quite crowded, esp. after meals) but of demonstrating status, pure and simple.

There were useful privileges (being allowed to ride a bike round the school, for example) and purely decorative ones (like this one).

what Julian means is that he has asked the two sad people who appear to have nothing better to do to keep an eye on everyone else. I must admit it does smack rather of the wolves guarding the sheep-pen. (speaking only for myself of course )

OFF TOPIC!!! Where are the moderators when you need them...? Oh, there they are...

Coincidentally, when we had that little spate of spammers a week or two ago, I suddenly wondered who the moderators were. I had a look and discovered that they were among the least frequent visitors to the forum. It wasn't worth a comment, as, limited though my forum experience is, this is blatantly a self-moderating forum 99% of the time. (Visit my local Thailand forum if you want to see some fireworks!)

So who can use the Grecians path these days? In my day it was anyone who had their buttons. My b/f at the time had his academic buttons but as he was going out with mere old me he used to often give the path a miss. I do remember walking along the path on more than one occasion though, probably when it was dark!

No, we just get abuse from our fellow mods. The only reason I agreed to do it is because this is such a moderate forum. I couldn't cope with a really busy one.

Yes I can well believe it. I was using 'sad' in the teenage sense, as in wearing a comfy cardi and slippers, but I am sure you understood that.

it changed to include deps on my deps as that was the first year the grecians werent in avenue houses
