GHD Johnson

Post by Mid A 15 »

I received a copy of "Housey" this morning and glanced at it briefly and noticed a legacy from GHD Johnson.

He was an excellent maths teacher, housemaster in Barnes B and all round decent bloke in the sixties and seventies.

I'm sorry to learn of his passing in this way. Is there likely to be an obituary in either the forthcoming Blue or Old Blue?

I am sure the editor will publish it if Mid A 15 writes it.

A fair observation Foureyes.

I do appreciate that what is published in The Blue and Old Blue is dependent on contributions made and, had I known Mr Johnson better, I certainly would attempt an obituary as I had a lot of respect for him.

However I was not in Barnes B and only knew him because he taught me maths for a couple of years therefore I suspect others knew him far better than me and are thus more qualified to write a proper tribute.

What I can say though is that he made an anxious young boy who was not an academic high flyer feel relaxed in his lessons and fulfil what little mathematical potential he had. In other words he instilled some much needed confidence and encouragement.

I'm prepared to consider that my natural lack of confidence may have contributed to this impression, but I felt that some Masters were very good at highlighting one's academic inadequacies and concentrating on the class "stars" which was discouraging in the extreme to somebody already lacking in confidence.

That could never be said of Mr GHD Johnson's maths lessons in my experience.
