Little Help?

Anything that doesn't fit anywhere else, but that's still CH related.

Little Help?

Post by Hopeful_2009_Dep »

Hi there,

As you may see by my username I am hoping to get in to the school as a 2009 New Dep.
I have a few questions, if that's ok?

1. My friend is in Barnes B, can I chose my house or is it a 'get what you're given?' thing?
2. How many New Deps are taken in each year? Also, how many apply? Aprox.
3. What processes are there? Forms, Interviews?
4. What can I say to 'aid entry'? I know that's wrong but I'm seriously desperate to get in. My current school [with a sixth form] is terrible, I cannot stay there.

There is a thread called Becommng a New Dep which is probably what you need. It is full of interesting 'young people' who have been through what you are going through and would be deal to help you. Good Luck!

Perhaps Hopeful could have Little Help 2009 as the new new deputy Grecian thread? Just a thought -

Deputy Grecian 2007 was for Gemma, Becomming a New Dep was for John and Urgh-My-Pancreas!

Now it's time to hope for 2009. Unbelievable!

Hullo! Re. Boarding Houses, it's normally the case that you get a boarding house depending on how many people are leaving from that house, and various othe factors. However, you can still visit, and you may well be in the same Grecians' House, in which case you can ask to be in their 'Pod'. I don't know many how many people apply, but I think there's about 2 dozen new deps this year. For more specifics, I hand over to Idgie, John and Hannah. Ditto to the processes...Re aiding entry, certainly explain as clearly as you can why you are a CH case, and how you would benefit from the school and so on. I can't really think of much more that can be done.

It seems that we have our New Dep thread for the next 9 months!

Thanks :)
I'm pretty worried, I don't think I'm 'really' a CH case, I have a good life, just a terrible school. I couldn't afford any other school but CH if I got in.
As for the school, I've had things thrown at my group, been pinned by my throat to a wall, I cannot stay there :(
But I guess if I have too I have to eh?

"CH case" alias "need" is a very broad term and has been discussed on here previously.

As I understand it family finances are a big factor but not the exclusive factor in determining "need." Whether or not you will "benefit" from the opportunities offered by CH is also important.

Best of luck anyway!

Same from me.

You'd be surprised how many academically qualified kids would make the 'needs' criteria in this day and age.

Sounds a bit obvious, but if you do any extra-curricular activities, play them up big time, you'd be suprised how much of a difference it makes in a school like ch. Also, make a big deal of the fact you come from a less-desirable school, and still managed to achieve good grades. All these things do make a difference, and should be enough to give you an advantage, but ultimately it will be your grades that are the deciding factor, especially in the new climate...
Best of luck, let me know if you want anymore help

As a very old oldie, I wish you luck. Although I have had a fair bit to say about some aspects of my time at CH, that was probably nearing par for the course in the 1940s. Nevertheless it's a very fine school.

I'm not toally sure I have the right number of grades at the right level. Do you know if they count each science separatly or just with one overall grade? At my school we get Physics, Chemistry and Biology as separate grades rather than one overall grade. If they aren't counted separatly I only have 5 A and B grades.

I know I won't get in with this so any help would be appriciated.

Also, my French grade [predicted grade] is supposed to be changing in a few weeks. There is a note from my French teacher on the report I'm sending but it says I am motivated to make the change not that there has been a change.

Do you mean you did a triple science Gcse? if this is the case then you probably be ok, because CH does the double award. So what GSCE's do you actually have and what are you predicted?

English Predicted A
Maths Predicted A
Double Science Predicted A [overall]
IT full Predicted A
RE short Predicted B
French Predicted C [hopefully soon to change]
Geography As level
Photography Predicted D [lost some year 10 coursework after deadline (in the hands of my teacher) which lowered grade]
Food and Nutrition Predicted B

I'm not sure if RE will count [if it does I have a definite 6] because it's a short course.

That theoretically should be enough, although you need to be aware that other people applying will have vastly better results, it really depends on what your year are like. I think it would be a good idea to join as many organisations etc as you can in the following months. Things like air cadets and choirs are always impressive, especially in ch. Do you have any musical grades or anything, because they also contribute to your grade count?

I don't but in the past I have played flute and currently play drums, also I attend creative writing as an after school activity. It's an 'invitation only' club and you need to get high English grades to be invited.

Thanks for the tips, I'm afraid my singing sounds like a cross between white noise and cats screeching but I was looking at a few clubs at school, I think I'm going to join the media club and the badminton club.
