The athletes themselves say that this is a fast track for the sprinters as it is quite hard, (I think Bolt said something of the sort) but not so good for the long distance runners, not that it seems to worry the Ethiopians.

!!! STOP PRESS !!! Great Briton leading Australia in the medals table. Oh what a wonderful time to be a Pom in the Australian Army. Not that in East Timor I have actually seen anything of the games, but what does that matter when I can wax lyrical over luncheon about Veladromes and coxless fours. The antipodeans seemed stunned into silence, unable to comprehend what is happening. The sky is falling on thier heads, and with the swimming all but over there is the chance - slim but real, that plucky little Briton, that nation where 'just reaching the final was my Gold Medal', where coming fourth was a national pastime, could actually beat the *******. Oh, if only..... what happy days they will be :D

Of course, the stock reply will be... "what bl**dy Olympics?". So what next? Is it too soon to dream of KP's England regaining the ashes?

Well there's the rugby league world cup in Australia, starting 25 October. Don't bet against an England/Australia final....

The Russians overtook us on the Medal Table... fair enough, but the sad thing is that they did it with a gold medal in Synchronized Swimming.... Ugh!!

A very succesful Olympics for GB, especially considering the number of athletes we entered. Here are some nerdy statistics which show that, apart from the USA, we punched pretty much above our weight:

1) China: 639 athletes entered, 96 medals won = 1 medal per 6.6 athletes

2) USA: 596 athletes entered, 107 medals won = 1 medal per 5.6 athletes

3) Russia: 467 athletes entered, 69 medals won = 1 medal per 6.7 athletes

4) GB: 311 athletes entered, 47 medals won = 1 medal per 6.6 athletes

5) Germany: 463 athletes entered, 41 medals won = 1 medal per 11.29 athletes

6) Australia: 433 athletes entered, 46 medals won = 1 medal per 9.4 athletes

No sign of France anywhere - ha ha ha!!!

Why do we all love the French so much?

Isn't French the official language of diplomacy?

Pierre de Coubertin is the founder of the modern olympic movement and so I guess this is why le français is one of the
official languages...Allez les Bleus!

French and English are the official languages of the Olympic movement. The other official language used at each respective Olympic Games is the language of the host country. Consequently, every proclamation (such as the announcement of each country during the parade of nations in the Opening Ceremonies) is spoken in French, English and the host country's native language.
