Shine Jesus Shine

Post by Angela Woodford »

I accept the rebuke from UMP that I was way off topic before.. however, considering that we are or have been the Royal , Religious and Ancient Foundation... which she is about to join.... Go, hymns and worship songs!

I feel a great deal more tolerant towards modern stuff in church music than I once did. There used to be a couple of hymnbooks to which people of my age were propelled called "Youth Praise". I can still hear a number called "How Great Thou Art" being belted out on the piano!

However I have encountered a parody worship song from Kit And The Widow. If you are Evangelical, young, sensitive - please look away now!

Jesus, see us proudly stand
Here with our groovy band
Jesus loving you makes us so happy
Jesus, what a shame the music's so completely crappy

Jesus don't you think it's great
Hymns to which the young relate
Oh God, why then is it so, God
Everything's at least a generation out of date

Jesus though the beat is hot
Mozart I'm afraid it's not
Jesus you inspire us with your karma
Or, if not inspired, just a bit more than Bananarama

Jesus it's a rank disgrace
How, God, just the human race
Fashion first the St Matthew Passion
Then the sort of dross that even Cliff could hardly face -

Jesus as one more guitar
Plods through Kumbah - frigging- yah
Jesus don't you want to sink an axe
Deep down in our brightly-coloured nylon pac-a-macs

Jesus, as thy bounds advance
Music doesn't really stand a chance
Still, God, though it makes you ill, God
What is really horrible is when we start to dance...

Church music's been on the decline since about 1580 (I choose my year advisedly) in my opinion. Put like that, you'd think not many people would agree with me. But here in Germany at least, sing-along (or should I say chant-along) Gregorian-chant services are hugely popular, so maybe I'm not quite so eccentric after all.

Actually, I rather like that! What's the tune to? It certainly doesn't fit SJS...

Some years ago we went to the wedding of Joe's niece S...., who had been first a violently devout Catholic, then a member of a Catholic "house church", then an apparently unaffiliated house church. We awaited the service in an Anglican church with some trepidation.
The service started with the traditional marriage service, but as soon as they were safely and legally wed, up leaped the leader of their group to announce "now we'll sing some songs". The printed sheet had about a dozen of the most banal rhymes I ever heard, and it looked as though we were going to get the lot! The first one was sung twice, and during it they started to dance, at which S.s brother, who had given her away, groaned and put his hands to his head in embarressment. Imagine what the back view looked like, the bride was/is a large young lady, with beefy arms, and from the back it looked as though she was do
ing the washing on an old-fashioned washboard. It was an experience not to be repeated.
We only sang about 5 of the"songs" i'm pleased to say.

II Samuel, chap 6 v14

And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.

15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.

16 ...Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart.

This makes me laugh. There was somebody who didn't approve of dancing before the Lord!

A few years ago, I was interested to read on a Church notice board "Liturgical Dancing". I'm trying to think where it was... a very large and beautiful London church - I'd just been walking down Jermyn Street - no, it's name escapes me! Liturgical Dancing sounds quite formal?

I wonder why it seems totally right and appropriate to me when a Gospel Choir breaks into brilliantly exuberant song and dance?

Strange. When it's black, it's fabulous. Hmm. :?:

Did a search for Liturgical Dance. It's fascinating!

Masses and masses I found interesting. Couldn't resist checking out what to wear as well! A lovely site - "Liturgical Dance dresses are a staple of your praisewear wardrobe.."

I musn't joke. It's very spiritual stuff.

I consider Kit and the Widow to be enormously funny. They are two ex-Cambridge Footlightsy guys with a piano, a bit like a modern and far more frank Flanders and Swann. A "society and theatre cabaret act" which could be booked to perform in Chapel! Think of it!

Just found this whilst procrastinating:

A Kendrick song with Shine in its title? Hmmm...it's quite funny, but quite hard to make out the words, mostly because they're either american or simply very high, or both.
