JR - how lovely - don't go to special trouble when you are busy. But the cats sound magnificent!

Ferdinand has done me a special favour. Shut in the porch by mistake, he was caught short, and the floor tiles (which I've never liked) will never be the same again. Am now prising them up. The Ruler Of All The Universe is not very pleased! A very clever thoughtful cat, Ferdinand!

He's now around six months old and is still tiny. We think he must have had a very bad first four weeks of life. Riagan and Toby are devoted to each other. Toby is still the 'Surrogate Mum', spending ages washing him.

I've had a few problems with my digital camera, but when I get it sorted, I'll send J.T. an updated photo.

Young Riagan has an appointment at the vets on 3rd April for 'undercarriage removal', but we haven't told him yet !

Very glad to hear the kitten is thriving at six months. If I remember rightly he is completely black? It's very sweet to think Toby is washing him like a cat mother. Miaow!

This piano playing cat is so clever! I have shown it to Ferdinand (splodgy orange and white) and I could tell he was impressed. None of the cats I've ever had has reacted to music, but years ago, a friend's cat would yowl at the "Coronation Street" theme.

Or perhaps it was just at supper time?

Nora has got quite a good technique for a cat! She reminded me of Jules Holland doing a bit of boogie woogie when she got up onto her hind legs. If I'd had her teaching me I might have enjoyed piano lessons more and kept it up. Our cats have always liked walking up and down the keyboard which can be a bit disconcerting at night. One of my Mum's cats - a delicious if rather haughty Russian Blue named Oscar - used to sing while I played the 'cello (probably out of pain rather than enjoyment as I wasn't very good!) and another, a black former farm cat named Taylor would rush in and sit listening to Bach. Obviously highly cultured and a cat after my husband's heart.

Many years ago we had a British white shorthair female. (No ! She wasn't deaf !)
If ever she heard 'Greensleeves' being played, or you whistled it, she would roll in ecstasy on the floor - Very similar to a cat with cat-nip !

British shorthaired cats are so attractive - lovely round smiley faces and plush fur.

Greensleeves... hmm.... that's very interesting! The tune itself did it for that cat. Remarkable.

Recently Liz alerted me to what's really in tinned cat food Whiskas, Felix etc. I was horrified! (Probably better off not knowing). I have a mental image of a cats' chef somewhere cooking up Salmon and Tuna that's specially nice...

Ferds and Jasmine eat these foods quite happily, but what does a cat breeder/shower feed? Have your pusses had a special diet, JR?

As you are aware, I'm very far from being a cat breeder/shower, so I can't answer your question,

BUT,

are you aware of the huge recall of pet food which is currently being undertaken in the USA? I'm not sure that the whole story has been revealed yet, and the last I heard was that rat poison had been found in significant amounts. Several animals have died from kidney failure linked to consumption of the processed food, many are assumed to have died with the link not having been made, and more are expected to follow.

We have been feeding raw food for several years - chicken necks and carcasses, thighs and wings when they are available on special (for human consumption, yet cheaper than necks etc in the pet food section of the supermarket), lamb offcuts, marrow bones. We can still buy spinal columns (gross, I know), but I'm guessing that they are 'off the menu' in BSE declared countries. Kangaroo: muscle meat and tails. Fish for the cats - plus the odd bunny and mouse that they catch themselves. Oh, and eggs.

An enormous benefit to someone who lets her animals come within breathing distance is that their breath doesn't smell offensive. Also, droppings break down and disappear in a short space of time - very handy when you live with a boxer who, with 8 acres to defaecate on, chooses to do so close to the house.

OK, I'll stop right now; before I get started on vaccination practices.
