Perhaps inventing interesting put-downs is part of being a classics teacher.

One of mine, on returning a piece of work to me, had written "signs of hope continue to bloom occasionally on the dunghill of your Latin prose".

Still, the teaching of Classics at C.H., particularly at A-level, was outstanding. Even I managed to complete 2 years of latin at Edinburgh University without really doing much, and one of my ex-classmates is now Professor of Classical Languages and Literature at Oxford University.

He always was quite brainy, though!

I don't think Archaeology was taught when I was at school - might have been interesting to do.

Medieval history is the best - I used to be taught in the History Library by Dr Southern (the outgoing headmaster) and by Dr Wines - brilliant lessons...

(And a lot of the school's grounds appear to have been turned into carparks in the last few years!)

I've got £100 saying carpark - which is unfortunate, or they'll build more great big houses to take up the rest of the free space

One of the nice things about looking back on one's schooldays is that, whilst one always remembers and respects the good teachers, bullies and inadequates cease to have any away over you, either physically or emotionally. If your Latin teacher believes it acceptable to abuse you verbally then presumably she is content for you to give as good as you get? If not, you could either complain to the Head (via your parents if you want) or simply ignore her safe in the knowledge that you are moving on to better things and she remains inadequate, unpleasant and probably unhappy in a job that she undoubtedly, deep down, loathes.

Rant over - it is just that I hate it when adults pick on children, particularly when it is hard for them to defend themselves.

Hi!. I got my new glasses today, they're a tad ugly but ok I suppose.

My Lating teacher actualy handed back my homework in 4 pieces once, saying it was so bad that she had to rip it up. And on one of my tests she gave me a minus 2 because although I did get zero, she thought I did so badly I should get less.....but then again, that is the job of a teacher isnt it. To belittle your efforts and compare you to the rest of the class and find you wanting.....isn't it?

Maybe not. hm hm.

I have heard from many people that Classics at C.H is fabulous and i'm expecting great things now.

Yes, well It was my birthday. I thought I might aswell wait the extra 2 or 3 days to join the forum on my birthday so I could say I was adhering to the over 16s rule.

Thanks for the birthday chant and I do hope next year I will be very busy, especially since both I and my freind who also was accepted share a birthday.

I didn't think making an announcement like that when I had just arrived would be very.........appropriate. :)

p.s thanks again kerren for the badge and the books, I finished them and they were really interesting and informative!.

Out of interest, Gemma, how did you hear about CH? There was a thread on this a while ago i know. I can only assume that my primary school teacher put the idea to my parents.

It's actualy quite an interesting story. In year 6 I heard about it from a freind at church who's child went there and was saying how wonderful it was but my parents and I didn't think I would get in and if I did it would be too expensive ( we didn't understand the charity aspect, I dont think ) and it was one of those out of reach schools that only 'other' people got into.
I sort of forgot about CH for a number of years to be honest, until Rock School came out and everyone was buzzing about it. How wrong I was!, but to be honest,
I was going to only apply for GCH ( my current school ) but we were chatting at lunch about 6th forms and one of my freinds mentioned that they might apply for CH. My interest was sparked.

I went on the net, found out how great it was, realised it wasnt what I thought and fell in love with the place. I applied, got an interview and the rest is history.

Thanks for that Maggie! Yes, I think that 'family' is the right word! All us oldies are going to be rooting for you now Gemma, all the way through the next two years.
Glad you like the 'Spirit of Susannah' - and yes I thought you would relate to the last chapter.
The doll, by the way, is 'real'. In the CH Museum at Horsham there is the charred remains of a piece of wood which might once have been the body of a doll, found in what was the ruined part of the school after the Great Fire of London. Like 'Susannah', there's also a bit of tradition about the doll.
So you can see what a great and goodly heritage you are about to join! The family is hundreds of years old........

Are you allowed to visit the museum, well I'm guessing you are since otherwise there would be no point in it being there would there! but is it open regularly because if it is then I sure would love to go there a couple of times to see all of those things.
I'm delighted that a lot of people are rooting for me now, acutally Im outrageously happy, Thanks and I hope I don't let everyone down.
Family..... .Can't wait to be a definitive member ( as in, wearing the housey coat ), I suppose that I'm currently a newborn, someone new with eyes wide open and awed. Well, I like that analogy anyway.

I'm feel sure that pupils can visit the museum.

I visited it on a Coleridge B Re-Union day and found it excellent !

Seeing the 'sicker', (infirmary), from the inside again, bought back many memories !
