The greeat Asian Flu epidemic saw most of the school turned into sicker extensions. At it's height Col A had just 2 people on Lunch Parade - after we lent a flag bearer to some house reduced to nil.Scone Lover wrote:So what happens when an epidemic hits? Having more money doesn't make you happier. I have 50 million dollars
but I'm just as happy as when I had 48 million.

He didn't stand for people trying it on but, as you found, if the situation was serious he was the most pleasand and humane person. The things he taught me have kept me out of hospital on many occasions since - including how to deal with 15 - 20 wasp stings at the same time. Perhaps one of the best members of staff when I was there.J.R. wrote:

He scared the hell out of some people, but when I was in the Sicker after a couple of bee-stings, courtesy of Rip Kirby, (the discovery of my allegy to bee stings), I found him a lovely humane guy ! 2 bee stings and a whole week in the Infirmary. Wow !

1998 actually... my year was the first year to have Hertford - and then it was for Grecians...
The 'house' was in what used to be the downstairs wards and had been done up quite nicely - obviously the wards were turned into study bedrooms...

I seem to remember that we were in the classrooms with books to read rather than proper classes. Monitors (as in the 1800's originals) were used. Of course no real learning got done.Scone Lover wrote:We had some epidemics but wow, that was a peach! what were classes like or were they abandoned?sejintenej wrote:The greeat Asian Flu epidemic saw most of the school turned into sicker extensions. I was one of those who succombed later in the epidemic - I think I was bedridden in Maine but cannot remember which or where.
I've seen (I may actually have it myself) a photo of a near lone standsard bearer going into dining hall..

Yes indeedy.Scone Lover wrote:Oh I see, so they were fully integrated by the time you arried at the school then.
when the schools first amalgamated, the girls were only in 4 houses - Barnes and Coleridge.
Then in c.1990, Leigh Hunt B became a girls house with Leigh Hunt A becoming a girl's house in 1992 (my year were the first girl squits in there!)
I believe that this year, Thornton has become a girls' house making the school 50:50 boys and girls...
