True - but if we compiled a list it would have to go back to the "Start of our Foundation".... drat that song is now in my head! we would have oodles and noodles of numbers for each age - and never be anywhere nearer to understanding them!Katharine wrote:Not always, Jude, ask KerrenJude wrote:horsham started with 2nd yrs at 10/11

Hi
Just to add a little more confusion.
I was in Lower Four Alpha for a while (a year? half a century?) as were a whole classful of fellow pupils.
Never understood the "Alpha" status though it was rumoured we were slotted between the "As" and the "Bs"
It was not normally written in full of course but my keyboard doesn't have an "Alpha", closest I can do is & or maybe ~ <VBG>

Third year 6th.Great Plum wrote:What's senior sixth?
The great difficulty in the 1940's and early 50's was that 11+ starters went into the Lower ivth, but they started learning French in the 3rd form, so we had to do 2 year's worth of work in 1 year. The "extra" group was taught by Miss Bailey(?) who normally taught German.

In my day (and as you can see from Mary's and my postings, I was a bit before her, and they changed things after I left), the Senior Sixth was a third year in the sixth form for people (not many of them) who had taken A levels young and who were then being groomed for Oxford or Cambridge entry. If there was a 'Senior Sixth' the Head Girl was usually drawn from that year - and then sometimes left at Christmas time so someone else had to be appointed to take over for the rest of the year. This is exactly what happened in my final year, 1965-1966.

Between 65/66 when Kerren left (which was also the last year for year 6 10-11 yo. we had an odd assortment of year names so anyone who had been in a IVth for or Vth form didnt have to go back to a lower number.
I think I went IIIrd form, Lower IV, Upper IV, 4th form, 5th form.
