Does anyone have any memories of their first day at CH?
Been away for a little while - mainly abroad and out of contact.
First day hell and worse.
I had been brought up in a tiny village in Devon leagues from nowhere and leagues squared from civilisation. Local language was adrift from English; I never had that chance but the local fishermen could talk to their Breton counterparts. School teacher arrived after a year or so - perhaps from Lunnon and we could not understand her.
So; CH arrival after well over 250 miles by train and not understanding the other victims. Had hoped that the Prep A housemaster who had holidayed locally would understand the language problem but no way.
Get dumped there and had another boy detailed to show me how to dress - and shove a bin in my throat.
Looking out the window after dark and saw those lights coming straight at me - terrified; had never seen or heard of a plane. Had big problems with the housemaster!
Housemaster who could not speak English; in rugby he said we must not pass forward so I turned around and threw the ball over my shoulder. Stupid moron told me off for following his instructions! And so it went on and on .
