Septimus Ward

Whilst doing some family research I came across Septimus Ward, born in Manora, Bengal, in 1886. On the 1901 census he is a boarder at Christ's Hospital in London. I wondered how one could find out more? I know he married twice - his first wife died - and he was a telegraph operator and worked for the Eastern Telegraph Company. Any help would be great!

Interesting name which has come up with quite a few red herrings. This combination of words is sometimes used as a double-barrelled surname so are there any extra first names perhaps? CH records would give a clue to that.

First place to check is the quad at CH to see if he is the Private Septimus Ward killed 11th April 1918 in Flanders. I have minimal info on this man.

You write that he was a telegraph operator for the Eastern Telegraph Company which technically^^ existed until at least very recently and became part of Cable and Wireless. By it's own account it seems to have been a very good employer with great medical benefits (six months sick leave before dismissal) , pensions etc.,

C & W demerged recently - this would be part of the cable owning side so why not contact their personnel department? Any employee who signed up for WWI was paid in full by the company for the duration, would be re-employed by the company afterwards with the seniority he would have had from uninterrupted service ...............

The writer Virginia Wolff used the name in one of her pieces - I have contacted someone who knew her to see if she might have actually known someone of that name (though she lived in very different circles) but no luck there, I'm afraid.
