We are chameleons....
....according to John Franklin quoted in a big splash about James D'Arcy in today's Sunday Times magazine. Unfortunately not available online unless paid for!

What's the 'drift' of his article, Mary ?
I can't afford to read articles 'on-line' !!

The (hard copy) Sunday Times is less than the price of a pint.
Mainly about how James D'Arcy is going to be the next great British star, and a bit about his background, how he is always thought of as posh but he isn't really. Hence Franklin's comment.

a.k.a. Simon Darcy - he was a few years below me... played a "gene" in Bodywork when I was the "appendix" in 1987! He was also Gollum in the in the Lamb B house play.

When I want 'Right-Wing', I take The Mail.
I'd like to ask Mr Franklin his definition of 'posh'

John, unfortunately it is probably too late to take some sandpaper to that chip on your shoulder.
It was the journalist who said that James D'Arcy was seen as 'posh'
Franklin said that that Old Blues were chameleons and could blend in whatever the company.
Like me, from Royal Ascot last week to Harlow dogs on Tuesday night. Though I was with husband (miner's son, Yorkshire grammar school alumnus) at the time, so It's not just CH.

Now that I DO agree with. Chatting to a Knight of the Realm and his good 'Lady' over a GandT the other day. Tonight I will be lecturing non-league footy players, in very colourful language about getting booked for dissent and how much it will cost them THIS season !
Don't bother about popping to the hardware store for sand-paper, Mary. No chip on my shoulder. I am who I am, and proud of it.
Glad you enjoyed Ascot. Did you have one of those silly excuses for a hat ?

Yes, I agree with chameleons - I remember after we left having a conversation at a get together and most of my friends saying CH had made it easy for them to make new friends of so many different types because all CH pupils had varying backgrounds and characters. There were so many different reasons why people "qualified for a place at CH.

My picture is of me in my hat. I have said I am so pleased to be middle-aged because I can wear flat shoes and warm clothes, and as long as you wear a neutral hat, no-one notices that it's the same one you wore last year.

Re: We are chameleons....
I remember James D'Arcy (actually Simon D'Arcy) - he was in the year below me in my brother's house. Our paths didn't cross much but I do remember him being a pretty good actor. Don't remember him being especially posh though!!

I think it's the apostrophe, no-one would think he was posh no matter how well he spoke if his name was Smith.

Yes, I agree with the chameleon description. It's even helped me blend in well with middle-eastern culture and family life.

I must tell you, JR, that Mary is one of those fortunate women who look marvellous in hats. Her Ascot hat looked lovely.J.R. wrote:Glad you enjoyed Ascot. Did you have one of those silly excuses for a hat ?
Goodness, I wish I could be a chameleon. Never seemed to blend in with everyone else, anywhere! I wonder if I could have seemed normal if I hadn't been at Hertford? Too late now!

Thank you Angela.
I am sure you blend in just perfectly everywhere.

Re "Posh" or Pleb" -----
A good friend of mine ---(Opposite side of political spectrum !) was a County Councillor and an ex- Admiral.
He was a "Fighting" Admiral, having been in charge of Destroyers.
Over a pint, in the Club, we were discussing our "Origins" and it turned out that he had joined the Royal Navy, as an Ordinary Seaman.
The only other person who had a similar distinction was Field Marshal Bill Slim, who joined the Army as a Private.
I have the greatest respect for both of these. ------ "Posh" -- "Pleb"" ?
