Book about the history of CH?

Re: Book about the history of CH?
Slightly off thread.
I just thought I would mention that e bay has some C.H. books which may be of interest to you.
I managed to purchase the following for a grand total of £35.00 which included p&p. All in very good condition.
The Christ's Hospital Book publihed by Hamish and Hamilton 1953 with a forward by the Duke of Gloucester.
The History of the girls school of Christ's Hospital, London, Hoddesdon and Hertford by William Lempiere.
Christ' Hospital by G.A.T. Allan revised by J. E Morpurgo 1984. ( 2 copies sent for some reason.)
Christ's Hospital Hertford by Frances M. Page 1953.
Christ's Hospital Four Hundred Years Old. Published by Christ's Hospital 1953 and I can say that I found this one to be best of all although only 82 pages.
Also thrown in were a collection of old admission papers, prospectus and post cards and a beautiful Pictorial History of the school which dates early
1970s and mentions guided tours of the school at 25 pence !
All of these were purchased from a lady who's grandmother attended the girls school in the early 1900s and apparently collected numerous books and items from both schools. I consider myself lucky to have secured such a collection at such a reasonable cost.
We are still waiting to hear whether our son will be offered a place in September, following receipt of a letter from the admissions office to say that if a place becomes available we will be notified. The nearer it gets to the end of term makes me feel that this is highly unlikely but we live in hope!

That's one I've been meaning to pick up one of these days.barwen wrote: Christ's Hospital Four Hundred Years Old. Published by Christ's Hospital 1953 and I can say that I found this one to be best of all although only 82 pages.
One book I really regret not buying when I had the chance is the book on the CH Brangwyns. Piles of them were being flogged off when I was at CH - or attempts were made to flog off the seemingly unshiftable piles, and I never got a copy. Now - gold dust.
Bookseller's description: "The Decorative Paintings in Christ's Hospital Chapel (Printed for Christ's Hospital at the Saint Dominic's Press), Ditchling, Sussex, 1925. printed in double-column on Batchelor handmade paper, 5 full-page illustrations and a title-vignette (repeated on the front cover) by Macklin and Rigby after Frank Brangwyn, pp. [24], oblong roy.8vo., orig. qtr. white cloth, pale blue boards, front cover lettered, and with the Brangwyn design, in black"

Re: Book about the history of CH?
My father developed a passion for old books during the 1970's and spent time browsing old bookshops and market bookstands near his office at the Elephant & Castle. He picked up 3 books on CH which I now have on my bookshelf. They are the Frances M Page book, Christ's Hospital Four hundred Years Old and A history of The Girls' School of CH, London Hoddesdon & Hertford. I've no idea how much he paid for them but it wouldn't have been much.

Re: Book about the history of CH?
I was at the Great Dorset Steam Fair some years ago and there was a stall with second hand books. Among these were a selection on CH, naturally I perused them and bought a couple I think. The stall holder said that she had rarely been to any even without an OB coming along and telling her about the school, she reckoned it must be a very special place!

Re: Book about the history of CH?
I had all of those books, including the one on the Brangwyns - and I donated them to the Museum in January this year (along with my whole collection of CH memorabilia) in preparation for my house move. The agreement was that if there was anything which they did not wish to retain for the Museum, they could sell on for Museum funds. So go to Old Blues' Day with cash in hand!
There is also the W. Trollope book 1834 : http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=yPwB ... navlinks_s
which is now available to download on pdf, though if you were to buy it it would cost you about £200. I think he was the son of a former Headmaster, or maybe either/or he and his Dad were Old Blues? Anyway, it is pretty comprehensive, up to that point.

Once flights and hotels are taken into account, I'd be better off shopping via the Web!kerrensimmonds wrote: So go to Old Blues' Day with cash in hand!

Maybe... but I would bet that the prices asked for my surplus memorabilia will be significantly lower than those I paid as I amassed the collection in the first place!

Lots of great info and a very kind offer of a book to get him going so thank you all very much. I have downloaded the Trollope too and have got an Ebay search saved now. I had done a search on ebay but hadn't put in the apostrophe.....lazy, I know and of course many more results were turned up with the apostrophe!
Re: Book about the history of CH?
A very interesting book on the first half-century of the school is: Christ's Hospital of London, 1552-1598: "A Passing Deed of Pity" by Carol Kazmierczak Manzione (Hardcover - May 1995). The author is a USA professor of history who did thesis work at Cambridge and the result is this detailed book on the early years. The school struggled financially in large part because the Foundation was inadequate to provide the returns necessary for the expenses.

If memory serves me, she was a guest speaker at one of the USA Old Blue Dinners, when the book was mentioned. It was mentioned in the Old Blue.JackD wrote:A very interesting book on the first half-century of the school is: Christ's Hospital of London, 1552-1598: "A Passing Deed of Pity" by Carol Kazmierczak Manzione (Hardcover - May 1995). Fast forward 450 years and not much has changed, has it?
