Why not tip the ones from the bowl into the 22 litre box as well?

Open bowls bad. Empty 2L juice bottles (capped) good.

What a brilliant idea - I shall relay it to Himself. Better yet, do not let the situation arise in the future. I have the phone number safely stowed and will ensure that he doesn't leave it so long next time. Meanwhile I am waiting with trembling breath for the person to collect (any time after 7.30 am). I intend to firmly hand him/her the jammed 5-litre box and say 'Do you something I can tip these into?' flourishing the bowl (metaphorically speaking), and flatly refuse to allow a 22-litre box into the house. At least a small container will fit on a shelf and not dominate the room! With my luck the driver will not speak English, and my Estonian is not up to much! The next stage is to persuade Himself not to just drop the foil peel-off cover onto the floor, hearth etc wherever he happens to inject - silver confetti. He is one of those people who aims vaguely at the bin and usually misses - the same happens with dirty laundry; too much effort to lift the lid of the laundry bin! Typical male of the species!

Phew! All sorted. Nice (rather camp) man happily removed 5 litre container, waited while I decanted open bowl into another 5 litre container, was quite happy to accept that I didn't want a 22 litre anything, and left me two one litre boxes. Now why couldn't the jobsworth on the phone have been so accommodating? Anyway I can cross that off my To Do list!

Old old rule well known in the army; it's the erks wot gets things done, its the bosses who screw everything up. Remember that its the RSMs who run the army, not the officers and in this case you got a sensible NCO. Lucky lady

There are not many things on which I claim to be an Expert --- BUT --Type 1 Diabetes is one of them !
CV ::: over 54 years on Insulin, INCLUDING 3 years in the Army, married to TBA -- type 1 for 30 yars (Swears it is infectios !)
Authorised by Diabetes UK to give Talks on the subject --- ex Member UK Advisory Committee .

Our system, here near Poole, is to get a prescription from our GP (Free of course) for a 1 litre box, which we collect from our local Pharmacy -- in this case Lloyds -- but any will do.
Disposal, when "Fullish" is at the GPs Surgery, and a new prescription.

Diabetes UK have a Care line on 020-7424 1030 Monday - Friday 9am to 5pm -- Very useful

I hope this helps

On a positive note --- If you are going to have an incurable disease --- this is the only one under Your control !!

Fjgrogan wrote:Am I going mad, or just misunderstanding the situation? My husband, a diabetic, injects twice a day. The needle thingy, which I understand is called a sharp, then goes into a container to be collected for disposal. For some reason the last time 'they' replaced the container with a huge 5 litre thing which is far too big for his requirements, and we realised after some time that it didn't have the usual label on it showing the phone number to arrange collection. So for months we have had this huge unsightly thing sitting on the floor in the corner of the living room. It became full, indeed overflowing, until one day I accidentally jammed the lid shut.Meanhile I nagged 'himself' to find out who to phone to arrange disposal, but he kept forgetting and started dropping his sharps into an open plastic bowl on top of the box. Finally yesterday he produced the relevant phone number and I rang it - it turned out to be Environmental Services at the local council; when somebody rang this morning to notify me that they would collect tomorrow, I thought it might be wise to warn them that we had a full 5-litre box which was jammed shut, and ask if we could go back to a 1 litre box which would at least fit on a shelf out of reach of small children. Instant response 'Then we can't collect it. It would be dangerous for our driver. If he stabs himself you would be liable'. An altercation ensued in which I pointed out that it would also be dangerous then for our visiting grandchildren! She then suggested that they could leave an even bigger container (22 litre) and we would have to transfer the contents, but their driver could not wait while we do it because they have a lot of other calls to make. So I had to agree to that. Only after I had put the phone down did I realise that it is impossible to prise the lid off the 5-litre container, so how can it be a danger to the driver? (At no point had I mentioned the bowlful of loose sharps which we will simply tip into the new 1 litre container). So tomorrow we shall be presented with a 22 litre container as well, I hope, as the one litre one! My instinct is to try to give the jammed 5-litre box to the driver, since it is clearly 'safe'. If he refuses to take it then I shall immediately drop it into the 22 litre box and give it straight back to him. Then I shall quietly tip the bowlful into the new small box and put it on a shelf and make d**n sure that in future my husband organises his own more regular collections! Am I being 'thick' or is this another example of Elfin Safety gone mad? I do not see how a box which is locked shut can be a danger to anyone, except me if I am forced to prise it open to transfer the contents!

Sorry, rant over!!

Why doesn't your hubby ask for a Nova-Pen ?

Eldest daughter is diabetic and can quite happily inject herself through her clothing, any time - Any place !

JR, I think it is because what he is injecting is not actually insulin; it is something called Byetta which does have a pen rather than a syringe, plus disposable needles. As you can probably tell - I know how diabetes works but not much about its treatment!

I saw a pat of " PureCreamery Butter" today, which, on the back was printed "Allergen advice -- contains milk"

If it didn't ---- I should want to know why ? ----- this of the same ilk as Peanut Packs "Which may contain nuts"

........... or those wonderful 'let's play safe' disclaimers that although the product itself does not contain nuts it has been packed in a factory which also packs nut products and there is an outside chance that it might therefore be contaminated! Is it really that so many more people are allergic to nuts these days than in our youth? Surely if you are seriously allergic to nuts you will probably have grown up with a pretty good idea of what contains nuts and what doesn't. I did once read of a case where someone tried to sue a restaurant for not informing the customer that a satay dish contained nuts! And our local primary school caused an uproar when they tried to ban all children from including nuts in their packed lunches because it wasn't fair to those children who couldn't eat them! Followed to its logical extreme the entire school could have been on a very restricted diet!
