I exaggerate --- but it ain't feathered.

We are now away for 3 weeks, on a Cruise, so I expect the worst on our return
We have more than a few land bound porkers with a penchant for grubbing up and eating strawberry and aubergine plants but wild boar don't seem to like spinach. You are welcome to a family to test out their tastes :x (and their taste :) )

Before you go, Neill, just put a few sticks between and around the seedlings - just enough to prevent the animal from squatting. Lateral thinking, you see, plus years of experience of being owned by cats, which simply adore freshly-tilled soil - they assume you've done it solely for their convenience!

He's gorgeous!

Look at that lovely fur, and his splendid tail! Thank you Liz; Kit is just beautiful!

Thought that I had best explain. Davethekitten regularly sleeps sprawled out on his back. Jessthedaughter has a warped sense of humour.

No kittens were harmed in the filming of the photo shoot.

A terrible yowling at midnight the other night!

Ferdinand began to look a little less bright-eyed and less full of fun.

Then a large fur-less patch appeared on his lovely snowy-white chest. It seemed to be an abscess + a fistula. I stayed awake last night, listening to Ferds fretting, and worrying about his injured place. Lick, lick, lick.

The vet had an emergency slot this morning. A charming Spanish girl! "You're a big boy aren't you?" The cat looked pleased - he loves flattery. She confirmed that Ferdinand had been badly bitten, irrigated the abscess and has given him painkillers, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. The lovely vet's nurse emerged from the treatment room covered in ginger fur. She said that Ferdinand had been very brave. And then - THE BILL.

Obviously,I have not been the only person to have been shocked. There was a huge poster in the vet's car park.

"Adult Resuscitation Technique in the case of Cardiac Arrest".

When daughter and I went along to a dog show to meet the sire of a wolfhound pup that Jess intended to buy (didn't happen, as the pup died at 4 weeks), the thing that the wolfie owners most wanted to talk about was to be prepared for the size of vet bills. It hadn't occured to me that they directly correlate with the size of the dog.

Slight change of topic; I just went to open my French windows and noticed in the nick of time that there was a young fox curled up on top of a builder's bag full of firewood, literally 2' from the house. I called my husband to come and look. The fox stirred at my voice but settled again until my husband said 'It doesn't look well'. Then it got up and strolled away; its rear end did look a bit mangey. I am amazed that the Staffies next door had not reacted. Here in 'leafy' suburbia we often see foxes overnight, but not usually so close to the house in broad daylight. In the current climate of panic following the attack on two toddlers in their own bedroom recently, I do hope that someone doesn't attack the poor creature. Shortly afterwards I battled my way through shoulder high grass, nettles, brambles etc to the shed at the end of the garden (yes the new one we had built last year at vast expense), but if the fox was still around he was staying hidden.

I'd heard that when foxes are around in broad daylight and don't run away from humans, it's often because they are old or unwell - ie they haven't got the strength.

Toddlers attacked by fox inside house? Yikes.

I realised last night just how much bigger rats are than mice: amazing observation for someone with my experience of handling rodents. The one that I spied on my windowsill appeared to be only slightly smaller than my cats. Can't think about how it got into the house (in the cat's mouth? through the cat flap?). My scream of horror sent it skeddadaling behind the book shelves, and it refused to emerge, despite my threats and banging about with a deck scrubber. Eventually did a deal with it: I would open the french doors slightly and lock myself in my bedroom on condition that it exited, never to return, and promised not to invite any of its friends into the house.

Spent last weekend camping on the Eyre Peninsula (between Adelaide and Perth), where they are not quite under mouse plague conditions (in that the ground is not yet appearing to undulate), but are close. The cats and dogs are pretty much over catching and dispatching them. I heard noises coming from a friend's kitchen, and upon investigation found that the noise was coming from the meat safe, which was housing bread and crackers. Opened the door and removed a loaf which was warm and began to move  , then little furry bodies began leaping from the safe, seemingly throwing themselves at me kami kaze style as I let out a series of high pitched squeals. They had chewed through the wire to gain entry. More noises from behind me: 7 mice inside a cereal packet.

I really do have serious doubts about this fox and the baby story.

As a country boy, born and bred, I know for a fact that foxes are naturally cowards. We do occasionally get them in our garden. Our two boy cats choose to ignore them and vice versa, though I have no doubt they would 'scoot' if our boys approached. Yes - A fox WILL take a feral kitten.

To honestly believe that a fox/foxes entered through an open patio door, past people in the room, then made his/her/their way UPSTAIRS to attack twins in their cot beggars belief.

HOWEVER..........................

I will submit one theory that I have had for many years, and it relates to nappies and waste matter. I have a feeling that certain predatory animals have a natural in-born hatred of the smell of urine/poo from infants. It may well be something to do with their protective nature to their own young.

Remember the 'dingo-stealing-the-baby-from-a-tent' case near Ayres Rock in Australia some years ago ??? The baby had had it's nappy torn off and dragged away from the body.

Makes yer fink, dunnit ??
