I'm a whisky drinker, but I am not going to tell you with what I mix it. Perfectionists would kill me...
(NB not malt, though, which I enjoy on special occasions with just water. My main tipple is only supermarket blended)

Offensive? I didn't understand enough of it to be offended! I switched off in the middle from sheer boredom.

Did anybody, watching Pete Owen Jones do "80 Faiths Around the World" enjoy the unintelligible snake-handling churchgoers of the Appalachian Mountains?

Re: Does anyone on this forum go to church?
Thank you very much, Alan - I enjoyed seeing more of this Pentecostal sect.
I looked up the references in my (CH) Bible!
"And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." (Mark 16:17-18)
"Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you." (Luke 10:19)
I note the dancing worshippers were taking swigs of strychnine, which counts both as a "deadly thing" and also a stimulant! Many of the worshippers seemed to have a bit of a family likeness...
Praise the Lord.

Re: Does anyone on this forum go to church?
I didn't see the Lenny Henry sketch referred to but I have long held that view of at least some of the American evangelists who have made it over to this side of the pond (on TV for example). Unfortunately I happen to know someone (not American) who has been in the UK for nearly 50 yerars who has his/her own church and is just the same.Alan P5age wrote: For my own part, I think his portrayal of American Evangelists as businessmen marketing Christianity (as they would some other consumer product) to people they have utter contempt for is a pretty fair appraisal, but I could be wrong.
Having more money doesn't make you happier. I have 50 million dollars
but I'm just as happy as when I had 48 million.

Re: Does anyone on this forum go to church?
I tend to agree with Alan about American Evangelism.
We have just had a "Scandal" about rhe "Samaritan's Purse" organisation, which invited a School to fill shoe boxes with gifts for the 3rd World, and -------- included in the box, was a "Promise" to read the Bible, to become a "Child of God" --- TODAY ! and to get other Friends to do the same.
This Organisation, is fronted by Billy Graham's Son, and obviously has no idea of the connotation of the organisation of "Samaritans" in the UK.
I am sure their intention was to imitate the action of the Samaritan in Jesus' Parable, which I applaud --
But it didnt go down vey well round here in Deepest Dorset !
I understand the Guardian had something to say about it

And obviously no idea of the concept of simply doing good just for the love of humanity, eitherNEILL THE NOTORIOUS wrote:I tend to agree with Alan about American Evangelism.

Now that I do find gratuitously offensive, especially when offered as 'entertainment', but then I am old-fashioned!
