And to answer the orignal question - I wasn't at the front of the band - more at the back... but to my knowledge the moves have ot changed that much...

Well he plays (after a fashion!) the piano and violin - neither very useful in this connection!. But he likes his music and will have to stop lessons when he gets to Housey because of financial constraints - he bashes around on his kid brother's drum kit, and I think he rather fancies having a go on the drums. Is it possible?

Thanks Elouise - obvious answer that! Trouble is, for one who has not yet found his way around, the bandmaster's whereabouts may be something of a mystery and there may not be time for a full-scale hunt during induction week! I expect he will suss it out ok, I was just trying toi get some of the reconnaissance done first.

Bandmasters room is on the ground floor of the music school at the back (I think!)

I'm sure he could get drum lessons - I've no idea how long it would take to get up to standard in the band though...

I'm pretty sure that if you're past grade 5 standard (i.e. have passed grade 5) on a instrument, you get free tuition. That's exactly what happened to me anyway.

Same with me - but that may have changed?

Thanks both. Well that's what we thought! Unfortunately, while he is just about grade V on both instruments, they seem suddenly to have pushed the goal posts to grade VI - that he is not!! He is very upset that we are going to stop his lessons tho!

Thanks Ferg. Yes he is - in Peele A (see limerick in limerick thread). Are you in the band? I think I will drop you an IM.

I thought that brass / wind tuition was free anyway (given that by learning these instruments you were likely to end up in the band). I hope this hasn't changed.......

I also took piano lessons for a while - these had to be paid for.

Don't know about strings, though.....Given my experiences sitting in the brass section of the orchestra in the '70s, I would have willingly paid people NOT to try to play them.

Afaik, all music lessons have to be paid for until Grade VI - I thought that some students got them free though...
