Matthew Oates (Prep B, LHB and Th B from c 63-72 I think!) popped up last night talking about butterflies whilst wearing a hat that made him look a little like Clint Eastwood without the cigar in the film (the title of which escapes me at present) with the theme tune of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
EDIT: the film is called The Good, The Bad and The Ugly!

Springwatch just isn't the same without Bill (Goodie) Oddie.
Kate's not bad, I suppose, but Packham gets right up my nose. He so likes talking down to people !

Just as well you got there first! Not that we'd have been cruel, of course.
How reassuring to see someone else having senior moments...

I felt that I should have enquired of Springwatch, about a discovery, which I made ----
While stripping the flowers from Elderflower bunches (purely for medicinal puropses -- nothing to do with Elderflower Wine !

)
I came across a tiny Spider, with a white body and with legs, which were the EXACT colour( very pale green, of the Elderflower stalks, it was such a perfect disguise that I wanted to photograph it ------ but unfortunately it ran off my hand, and disappeared into the kitchen floor !
I know some of you hate spiders and wriggly things, but this made me think --- ain't Nature grand ! -- this little creature had evolved / been created/ to suit it's environment for catching prey.
BTW I see Mr Packham is buying a Scottish Island !!

Oh, how I miss elderflowers and elderberries. We did manage to grow a bush in a very sheletered area at the farm. It flowered beautifully, but the berries were scarce and shrivelled due to our low rainfall. May I ask what medicinal purpose you put them to?

That reminds me of an account in My Family And Other Animals, and the fact that I promised to lend it to the wife of a colleague who is newly arrived from India. Who would have thought that a female engineer from India would love the books of James Herriott, and be interested in Gerald Durrell? Well, OK, so she hadn't heard of GD, but after hearing of her love for JH and singing the praises of GD she agreed to read his books.

Answers --- 1. Medicinal purposes (for TBA)is an Elderflower Concentrate, which, when diluted with sparkling water is NECTAR
2. OR-3/4pint of flowers with 1/2lb chopped Raisins + 3 lb Sugar boiling water all over, when cool add yeast, stir daily = a palatable wine (NTN)
3. OR Red berries for a red wine, although my Mother had a tree in the garden, which produced YELLOW berries, for a white wine
I have also seen this "Sport" of yellow fruit in the Jura, in Switzerland, where elder Son lives
