Can I just ask people to spare some thought for people in Queensland today? I have friends caught up in this current business.
Ditto. Been there (Cairns) and have good friends both there and further south. Been listening to ABC News 24 since early this morning - as good minute by minute coverage as one can possibly expect. I am actually surprised that comunications in the area are almost undamaged and so many places even have power. However the cyclone has yet to hit the central spine and it is that that the politicos are worrying about - where all power routing for the north is congregated.

I see that ABC seems to have started restricting its commentary to Australian viewers; pity.

I've just been in touch with 2 OBs in Oz - so relieved they are ok. Admittedly my Godson (Alex Matthews) is in Sydney so well out of the way but his sister Juliana (Matthews 80-87) is in Brisbane so a bit closer - she says they are too far south but that everyone is being urged to evacuate which is very unusual! They normally don't advise evacuation because is causes panic! She was lucky enough to avoid the flooding too, although she was cut off from her husband and daughter for a while by a flooded highway, preventing them getting home!

My thoughts are with the Queenslanders, and those in Florida, too (including a cousin) - sounds like they are getting a battering as well....

Feeling safe in deep cold snow :D
