I remember following certain teachers along the cloisters only to inhale the beautiful aroma of their pipe tobacco
JHDJ springs to mind or was it JDHJ? Barnes B'ites from 68 to 71 will know
Having reached a quarter of a century I notice that nobody seems to smoke pipes any more
So I am asking what is the sweetest and mildest to smoke tobacco for a pipe?
I still have my fathers pipe which hasnt been used since WW11
I am keen to use it in my old age

In my first job we had available duty free cigarettes and pipe tobacco. The one I remember was "Amsterdamer" which was a very fragrant smell and popular with the pipe addicts (I didn't smoke then). If you can still get it I would suggest that you try a little; even if you don't like it I suspect that others who hate pipe tobacco smells will actually thank you for its perfume.

CJM used to smoke a pipe in Barnes B, followed by Johnson, I think.
Balkan Sobranie, although according to "
http://www.thetobacconist.co.uk/", it is discontinued.
Most of the Dutch smokers I knew rolled their own, and I can´t recall any pipe smokers. Loose tobacco is a great smell.
Just after CH I tried a pipe, rather than cigarettes, but found no particular joy and the thing gurgled.
Apart from a couple of thin green things in CR, I have not smoked since.

I have only just discovered this Topic --- BUT ---
I smoked a pipe for many many years, have successfully (?) given up cigarettes, on which I had been on 60 a day Mentholated (!!!!)
My chosen tobacco was anything of the fragrent variety, "Clan" seemed to be the most available, and was cheapest.
I now, for some 10 years, smoke NOTHING ---- and I can only reccommend it as the best option.
My advice, as one who has--- against expectations -- reached a reasonably fit 82, is never to start !!!!!
Sorry to preach, but I now can smell a "Smoker" at 10 ft and it ain't nice !!
I have also kept my Grandfather's Silver-mounted Gourds and Meerschaums, dating from about 1900 ---- but as curios !

Paddy Cullen was probably the most rekowned pipe smoker in my time. When you went into the language block you could distinctly pick up his trace.
I think Roger Martin also smked a pipe...
My grandfather smoked one too for years and his favourite brand was 3 Nuns

When I was a child my father smoked Old Holborn, but always switched to a distinctive herbal smoking mixture if we were short of cash. I still remember the smell of it, and wonder what it contained. Years later I did not even notice that he had stopped smoking until he gave all his pipes to my brother - probably because he respected my wishes by never smoking in my house; if he ever forgot Maria used to make loud coughing noises to remind him, even when she was quite tiny!

I used to smoke old holborn but my children used to beg me to stop smoking with tears in their eyes and that worked!
Gave up at 45 yrs old and never went back
Decided after all not to smoke a pipe either
I'll let the drink kill me instead!
