September Old Blue

Once again the latest Old Blue was a delight to read. My dear Mama even gets a look-in - she's at the far end of the table, facing the camera, on the middle lunch photo on p9. I'm next to her, but hidden.

The real point of this posting, though, is to ask if anyone can put names to the faces in the girls' photo on p12. Looking at the list on the facing page, I can make a stab at some of them, but I'd be fascinated if anyone could do the rest, particularly Mina Temple who was Head Girl in my first year, and always seemed so poised and grown up. Lizzie Glen was deputy HG and I'm sure that's her at the back on the right. Other than that, is Susan Evans second from left at the front, Clorinda Parfitt in the middle, and Rohan Bolton second from right? But I don't recognise any of the others. Mina had dark curly hair so I'm guessing she is either front right, or second from right at the back, next to Lizzie (if it is Lizzie). I suspect some of the others left just before I started, as I came in 1967, but others were Senior VIth and left at Christmas, and the rest would have been the year below and elft in 1968.

Put me out of my misery, someone, and put names to the rest??? :D

I recognised Susan Evans, and I would think that is Lizzie Churchill middle row second from left. I don't know how you recognised Rohan (whose name isn't even on the list), I didn't and she gave me a lift to the Hertford reunion in April.

I'll see what I can do, but you'll have to wait a while - my copy of Feb OB limped into my mail box a few weeks ago, so I'll expect September's sometime in the new year :)

I recognise Lizzie Churchill's name but I can't remember whether I knew her or not. I suppose I must have done, as it's unlikely I would have been aware of someone from a different house who left before I started.

Rohan is listed under her married name of Dale. I only recognised her from having seen her at the first Hertford Museum visit. Clorinda was at Old Blues' Day in June. The other two I recognised, Susan Evans and Lizzie Glen, don't seem to have changed at all since they left CH!

I can't work out how to load photos into postings on this board, so have put on the Hertford Yahoo group. However, I accidentally saved it as a pdf when I scanned it, so it's under Files rather than Photos. The names given as attendees are:
Lizzie Glen 4's 1961-67
Elizabeth Lacey 2's 1960-67
Rohan Bolton 3's 1959-68
Elizabeth Churchill 7's 1960-67
Clorinda Parfitt 1's 1962-68
Susan Evans 3's 1959-68
Wendy Wright 2's 1961-67
Bronwen Sly 5's 1960-67
Janet Sussex 8's 1960-67
Mina Temple 3's 1959-67

I don't recognise the name Janet Sussex at all so I'm sure she must have left summer 1967. Likewise Bronwen Sly - although I recognise the name, she definitely wasn't in 5's when I arrived, so I assume I just must have seen her on 5's mons' board.

I recognise all the names in the photo, Jo, but agree that Susan Evans is the only one I could confidently name (She was at the dinner Kerren organised after DR's memorial Service.) I have a funny feeling the Janet Sussex was in my Patrol at Guides, possibly Wendy Wright too - but I wouldn't swear on that for either of them! I had forgotten that Clorinda had gone to 1's, she has obviously blotted out all memories of 6's as she doesn't list 2 Houses!

A few years can make such a difference in school can't it - you're saying that Mina was so poised and grown up, when to me she was junior to me in another house. There are several on this Forum who remember me just as Senior VIth and know nothing about my earlier years at CH!

Well this was my first 'Old Blue' - loved it, thought it was full of some really good stuff and loved the Hertford Reunion article, thanks Caroline. I'm guessing that I am not alone in becoming an Old Blue quite late in life and also one of many who got there through this forum so thanks Julian too! :)

Had a quick flick through and as said above looks another fine effort John.

The veteran 800 metre runner puts me (and I'd guess a few others) to shame!

I enjoyed the OB. Well done John. I was interested to read the interview with Ruth Deech. Her mention of the school was in line with a piece in theTimes some years ago, when she appeared dissatisfied with her time there, partly for some reason connected with her faith. And how many schools at that period consulted the girls on how the school should be run?

Who are the three ladies on the staircase in the Hertford article?

I couldn't see a caption for that picture.

Got mine last week..nice.

Just one question for our Spanish editor...

What happened to Rex Sweeney's regular "25years ago " etc article?

Couple of things before I answer your question

1. I'm not actually Spanish, I just live here.
2. Rex is very correctly particular about his surname, which is Sweeny
3. The 25 Years ago was a selection of headlines from the Blue 35 years ago and was mainly done by someone else.
4. Since we have had the Old Blue, this item has not been included, so this is not a new phenomena.

Now to the question.

Being the editor with a new magazine and with no-one else providing editorial input is a powerful experience. I had to take a decision whether to replicate what was in the Old Blue section of the Blue or gradually implement change.
The magazine is for all Old Blues, which naturally includes those who went to Hertford. Hertford rarely contributed to the Blue, so highlights from the Blue of 25 years ago would have had little relevance to them.
However, they do have memories of their time at CH and so I created the Memories section, where, space permitting, Old Blues can publish their memories.
Similarly, there is no correspondence section.
I took this decision because most correspondence is about articles in the various sections, and I can publish them if they are of general interest or send them on to the provider of the article.
Not ideal, I admit, and it is only one person's view of what the magazine should contain.
I asked for volunteers for an Editorial Board, with conspicuous lack of success. (I had 3, what I thought were firm volunteers, but 2 dropped out because of changing circumstances and the third never got back to me). I am still looking for volunteers.
The CHA questionnaire gives one the chance to suggest change and if there is sufficient demand, there is no problem with changing the magazine to bring it more in line with what readers require.
Hope some of that makes sense.

Thanks for the clairification, John. No offence for the Spanish jibe..I probably should have put it in " "...

Yes poor Rex..he would kill me for the gaffe but I know he was an active writer in former OB...

Let's hope that the survey brings some interesting comments. I've done mine...
