As with many shy people (and Jack Morpurgo was shy) he covered his timidity with confidence, bravura, and occasionally bluster. His education at Christ's Hospital gave him, he thought, his personal assurance, and taught him how to project his character in the public arena in a manner which would let belie his own integrity.
