Intersting one for you (well potentially).
I was informed yesterday by dad that Dr Southern's portrait to go up in dining hall and the SG andSM in from his last year. Now no other prior to this has.
I went to see it this morning (was in CH with fiance and took him to see chapel etc) and whilst its a lovely picture I think by having the SM and SG almost makes them stand out as more important than the 10 previous sets of SG and SM that have been during his time at head.
Has anyone else seen this yet or have a thought about it?

Amy,
Forgive an ignorant and elderly Old Blue but "SM" and "SG" mean what, please?

Second Monitor & Senior Grecian.

I feel quite pleased that this Hertford OG managed to work out those abbreviations for herself!
I think I agree with Amy that it seems odd that they are included in the portrait - it would be different if it had been a special year for the school or they had given the loyal address to a new monarch or something like that.

I believe the Head requested that they be in it - I may be completely wrong though!

Mrs C is quite right. Speaking as the tutor of the SM I can assure you this was the Head Master's express wish. No conspiracy theories need evolve!

Thanks for clarifying the abbrevIations. I had already interpreted SG as Senior Grecian, but had thought that SM meant Senior Master.
That said, it seems to me that what Peter S was trying to achieve was a representation of the student body and it woiuld have been totally impracticable to have rounded up every SM/SG who had served during his ten years. I think, therefore, that he should be praised for including two pupils in his portrait and not criticised for his choice of indviduals, which, I suggest, given the circumstances, was as good as any.
Well done, Peter, and I look forward to seeing the portrait.

I wasnt tyring to start any consiracy theories. Its fantastic for the two kids that they will be on the walls of dining hall for the future. and of course getting 10 years other SG and SM's would be diffiuclt.
I just wanted to get people opinions on the change of tradition.
