Strange week - first Mum (who has not spoken of CH for many years) sent me a clipping about CH from her local (Haywards Heath) paper together with my copy of 'A History of The Girls's School of Christ's Hospital', which I haven't seen in more than 25 years.
Then, while cruising through The Advertiser (Adelaide's daily newspaper) last night I came across an editorial entitled 'Winnie The Pooh Would Not be Amused'. It was the reference to Winnie that caught my attention, so imagine my surprise when I found a reference to CH in the text.
The article discussed the current hoo ha about a pupil at Millais School not being allowed to wear a chastity ring to school, and included a few dot points about uniform, including the following
Boys at Christ's Hospital School in Sussex wear a traditional ankle-length blue coat uniform which dates back to Tudor times and is probably the oldest school dress still in regular use.
Have just whizzed off an email to the journalist:
Hi Rex
Thought that you might be interested to learn that Christ's Hospital has, since its foundation in 1552, enrolled both male and female pupils, and can, therefore, lay claim to being the oldest girls' school in England.
All pupils, girls and boys, wear the blue coat.
