I gather the House singing competition took place a week or two ago. Was anyone there? How did it go? Is it still an important event in the school's musical calendar? Who won? Who failed abysmally?
(I conducted Mid A on no less than three occasions!)

It never happened in the 90's - I think it has only been reintroduced in the last 5 years or so.

Did you not ask your son, DBTS?? As he had a bit of a starring role...!
No-one failed abysmally - can`t remember boys, but BaA won girls unison, BaB won girls part song, BAA won best overall girls - so graet joy and pizza in prep block that evening! (first time BaA have won anything since my 2 have been there!)
Grecians-wise,GRW won best unison and GRE won part song .
I think thats right - my minds a bit muddled due to sleep deprivation!

Jonathan said he was a bomb and a trumpet - but I confess to being a little confused still! He said there is a video somewhere he thinks. Could it be placed here? or have a link to it or something?

I think it still existed in the early 90s as I seem to remember being forced to sing (which I can't do) some annoying tunes. Those awful rehearsals in house being watched over by power-hungry Grecians ... happy memories, not!

Hurrah for Barnes A. I'm proud. We (BaA) won best Unison in 1988. It was song that I'd suggested too! Day-Oh!

House singing did my head in. I remember helping out BaA house song on my grecians (when i was in GrE, singing in their part song as well as unison) and getting no thanks what so ever from most of the house staff, but some of the other people on my year who didnt help did get thanks.
I was not amused.
Remember, GrE is the musical house

I quite enjoyed it. I remember being allowed into senior (deps and Gecs only) common room in Col B, poss on my 3rd form, to listen to Feelin' Groovy by Simon and Garfunkel, I think an LP but it might have been tape. We all crowded in and sang along, with the parts and all. Great fun and I still like S & G!
Someone's boyfriend played electric guitar, we performed on Big School stage and lost, dramatically. But the Grecians painted flowers on their cheeks. Or were going to, or something.
The year before I don't remember the song but we performed in the Court Room, and I think we might have won. We got told off for some of us clapping on the beat and some off. Oh yes I do remember, it was a bizarre song I've never heard before or since, can still remember the tune and some of the words were:
(Ch)
Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine
When you gonna let me get sober?
Leave me alone and let me go home
Let me go back and start over
(V2)
A precher will preach and a teacher will teach
A miner will live in the mine
But I ride the rods, trusting in God
And hugging (?) my bottle of wine

Erm do you mind me asking what you meant by that. Does it mean there is a specialist music house?
When I was there, drum majors could only come from Mid A which I thought was unfair because I always fancied doing it. Mr Elliott offered to get me moved into Mid A but I was too proud of being in Mid B
