Here's an idea - we could enable auto-pruning (sounds painful!) on the "General Chat - Non CH" section, which would automatically remove any topic which hasn't been accessed for any specified period - e.g. 3 months?.

We'd have to ensure that topics which need keeping are moved into appropriate sections, as if they merit keeping (as they have a specific relevence to CH or Old Blues) then they probably should be in another section?

Thoughts??

This is a simple thing to do, and doesn't require any work/time to implement....

Not sure about the speed thing - it's really slow at the moment, but yes it may make a difference.

It sounds like a good Idea Julian - especially the lines that double or triple up on the same subject! (I know we all tend to veer away from the topic a tad!) It might also be good if we let you know when a topic WE have started feels "complete" there are a couple I started, which I feel have run their life and could easilly be removed / archived etc...

Is everyone in agreement? It's not fair to make Julian or Simon deal with the topics and make those decisions - and if we create a topic then I feel in some way we are "responsible for it"

I think Keeping cool in the heatwave can go - as it will now be along the lines of how to stay warm in the winter!

I like the idea of auto pruning in Non-CH after a three month (?) time. If that is easy for you it should be good for us as well.

I've just enabled compression on the database - seems to have speeded it up for me? Same for everyone else???

Re. closing your own topics - there's been complaints before about topics being deleted which contain other people's comments, but at the request of the originator of the topic....not sure about this one....
Locking the topic is easy though....

well something seems to have done the trick! Much better now! Amazing!

It's still a bit variable though.....

One thing I can try is to delete and recreate the database - this will take 15 mins, disabling the forum during that time - can do it now if nobody minds???

I'm basically in agreement too.

The one thing I think would be nice though is if we could keep some of the more serious debates we've had in this section as there have been some excellent posts from all viewpoints that deserve better than consignment to cyber hell or heaven.

Just my view though.

Maybe thread originators could suggest those that they would like to keep?

Few - got it back!

Relief is an understatement........

I took a backup, which then wouldn't upload because it was too big...........php is limited to a 2Meg upload at a time, when the backup is 80Meg....

Tried starting from scratch, with the latest version of phpbb, but still couldn't get the restore to work properly.

Got it back in the end with a great util called "bigdump" (sure that should get filtered!)

At least it proves that restoring a backup does work, but only with difficulty.

Not trying that again for a while....
