Does anyone else like the new biggest US Embassy?

Hey, and guess where it is.
IRAQ!!!
104 acres, 21 buildings, accomodation of 3000+ staff and a ring fence that is about 15ft thick.
The next largest is in Beijing, and covers a mere 10 acres and 5 buildings. So who thinks the Americans want control over Iraq?
Anyone?
No. Of course they don't.
And why didn't they pay for the land on which it is built...?
Oh yes. I almost forgot. Their amenities will be completely separate and state-of-the-art, unlike the dilapidated systems that riddle Baghdad.
It's been built by Kuwaitis too, though they aren't trusted to build the more sensitive areas of the buildings.

I am in the middle of an arguement with someone, an american, on another forum. He doesn't understand why there is so much ill-feeling towards the US when the US is so good to everyone.

I honestly think that 90% of people in the US have no idea what is going on.
Tim, ask your correspondent if 7/7 means anything to him/her?

It's quite true, but....
This country is enormous and so the number and size of domestic issues can be enough to keep them occupied.
More importantly however, the press here is very U.S. focussed and so the typical sources of news (TV and Newspapers) really don't give the coverage of world issues that you have in Europe. I suppose there are no excuses these days as the internet is so available, but those that do use the internet to study the news are just as knowledgable of world affairs as most in Europe. Don't forget, the are a large percentage of ignorami in the UK too (The Sun is the best selling 'newspaper' after all). It's the same here, just that that the population is a lot larger.

Also, I think that there is a certain attitude that "It's big, so what? It's American that's why!"

Yes but as the only remaining super power some might argue that its the US responsibility to educate its population in its world affairs (persnally we should do that more in the UK also). The worrying factor is the the american troops on the ground are just as bad as the people at home only with gun!! I sat through a two hour Navy law lecture yesterday which thankfully ws interspearesed with video clips, one of which was a US army recording of them shooting civilians because they thought they might be terrorists (a debatable point I hear you say) but its the commentary on it thats terrifying!!
