I don't think they had number ones when I was born ......

.... tho I can remember that on returning late from chapel choir practice, the house mons made me learn "If you lay a silver dollar down upon the ground it will roll because it's round" (Sandy Shaw) as punishment - only pop song I have ever known!

Excellent.

Mine was Eddie Calvert 'O mein Papa' No 1 for 9 weeks.

'Young Girl' came out the year I was 14 and 'School's Out' the year I was 18.

My Mum.... I don't think there were number 1's in 1935
John. (old by d.o.b. but inside I feel like two teenagers sewn together)

Edit: It looks as if I have sinned with an incorrect use of the apostrophe above. - but I will leave it like that as it backs up my old school reports that said the usual thing.. "If this boy did as well in the classroom as he does on the sports field.... etc etc.

Good for you. My next door neighbour (92) said the same thing.

The singles chart was not born until Nov 1952 (week ending 15th to be exact). The early number 1s of the 50s were based on sheet music sales. Interestingly the first 'record sale' number 1 was the same as the last 'sheet music sale' number 1

My husband was born 14th November 1952, so the week of the first singles chart.

For anyone who wants to find out more here is another link.

I see Mary's been 'googling' again.

Still doesn't get me back to 1947, though.
