Ah Neill - are you back from your holiday then? the forum has not been the same without you! The breadmaker has produced Italian Herb bread, which was OK, but didn't get eaten very quickly so I am hoping that it will still cut because it will probably make very aromatic toast; also Fruited Muesli bread - much more successful, has vanished quite quickly. I am now trying to decide whether to use the raspberries in the freezer for jam or for ice-cream, because another Old Girl has kindly given me the recipe for what looks like a very delicious raspberry ice cream - two snags (a) how do I measure a pint of fruit? and (b) where amongst the clutter is the ice cream maker? I stopped using it when it asked for vanilla powder, but by strange coincidence Maria found a mention on the Finnish Forum to vanilla powder which is apparently obtainable in the US. It reminded me though that I have some powdered blueberries which I bought in a market in Turku, so perhaps I shall try blueberry ice cream. And I shall place an order when my husband goes over later this month for various other powdered fuits. None of this bodes well for the ever-expanding waistline!

Blend it first into a smoothie type mix, then pour into a pint glass

I have one recipe for my Breadmaker, which involves Pale Ale and Cheddar Cheese -------which is nice
This, also, when it has "Gone Over" a bit makes delicious Toast --- and the smell of toasting cheese is to die for (

)
For which to die --- must remember I was at CH ! !

In the market here you buy strawberries etc by the litre - scooped up in a litre jug...maybe a pint of fruit is a pint glass full?

I remember as a child buying winkles by the pint - the man used to come round the flats where my grandparents lived with a barrow on a Sunday afternoon; I think he used something like a pint mug. Then we used to tweeze the winkles out of the shell with a pin. My husband says that they used to stick the black spot from the shell onto their foreheads, but that was in Paddington - we in West Kensington were far more refined!!

ExACTLY. US recipes measure everything in cups/pints aand you will find Pyrex jugs have 'dry' weights on them too.
I never weigh flour/rice/porridge oats etc, I always use a volume measurement.

No idea - another attack of your mate Ann O'Domini, I guess. But does the fact that you call it West Ken suggest that you were a local to that area, perhaps?

Nar mate ! --- Oi wuz brung up in Storkwell-- Lambuff ! --- although I was actually BORN in the City.
I think I have mentioned before, that having been sent to Stockwell Road, LCC School -- in white socks, at the age of 7 --
(Mummy wanted me to look nice !) --- by the time I got my Scholarship to CH I didn't get bullied ! -- and LM Carey as Housemaster, saw some potential, in this little Thug. so I became a Boxer and held a few Championships --- one of them 5 years before a certain H. Cooper !
After 33 fights (I should have stopped at 32 !) I was diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic, but continued in the Army for another 3 years, (bl**dy Minded !) and that was over 53 years ago !
Moral of the story is ----Don't send your little boy to School, in a tough area, in white socks ---or he will get Diabetes !
PS A number 34 tram takes you to the West End !!

Neill, I knew there was something about you............. I grew up on tales of life in Lambeth; my mother was born in the General Lying-In Hospital, York Road, Lambeth (wonderful name!), and her mother was one of a family of eleven who all lived around the Lambeth/Stockwell/Vauxhall area, most recently in Fount Street, which I understand vanished under the 'new' Covent Garden market. And, in a bid to get back on topic, my grandfather's family (from Ireland) were bakers!

Would that be Uncle Nick in New York who ran a speakeasy during prohibition? Is baker's yeast the same stuff as brewer's yeast - I guess so! Surely a speakeasy would operate on spirits (poteen?) rather than beer, though? You can see here the perils of oral history - as tales are passed from one generation to another they change slightly in the telling!
