As the song says, "It's different for girls".

We had coats, shirts, bands, breeches, pants, socks and shoes. That WAS deemed suitable for every waking hour (apart from sports, of course).

...... plus vests AND in winter a blue pullover. (Jonathan - very cold last week end - told me that no pulloever is worn under the Housey coat any more. Is this right?)

ALL our clothes were issued free including games clothes, CCF uniform and boots, Housey shoes, pyjamas etc. Can't remember about rugger boots and gym shoes though ......

I think you`ll find that most wear something, either under their shirt, or a dark coloured jumper over the shirt (as long as it can`t be seen!).
But the bright array of coloured tops in Big School during exams is interesting, - officially, pupils could be refused entry to exams for not wearing the correct uniform, I believe.
The best way to forget your troubles is to wear tight shoes.

Makes twice a week Housey issue vests and underpants seem altogether civilised.
Linings were just white briefs, not unpleasant, worn as a lining for the navy blue 'blues'.

Strange place to wear an onion! I thought the neck was more traditional.

Now I really am confused. (Mary, you didn't really have to wear briefs around your neck, did you?)

Almost all ours were issued free, but it was an interesting eclectic list mainly footwear that we had to bring. I will undoubtedly leave something out, so please come in and correct me!
We supplied suspender belts, swimming costumes, indoor shoes, hockey boots, plimsolls for games (but not gym shoes - kept in lockers in the gym?) slippers and Girl Guide uniform - but that was an optional activity.

I can't think of anything else. I am sure we had to take gym shoes too, or did we have bare feet?

We also had to supply our own tennis raquets and hockey sticks.

Suspender belts were a strange one, we wore stockings in winter long after the rest of the world had abandoned them.

By 1965 not everything was supplied by the School. I remember going to John Lewis in Oxford Street where my mother had to buy all our games kit from.

Likewise for me - sports stuff had to come from John Lewis (well, shirts, shorts and socks, anyway). I remember my mother having to send away for this stuff, as we lived in Somerset.

I think the 'Thrift Shop' at C.H. also did quite a bit of business at the time.

Sportswear is now supplied by a shop in Horsham, I think.
