Not entirely correct Amy - you can only enter your pod via the door of the pod allocated to your swipe card (apart from when doors are wedged open - you naughty people!!), but once inside you have access to 2 pods as 2 pods are based around each staircase.
For several years there have been seperate wings for girls and boys - only occassionally has it been necessary to mix due to numbers.
Thornton B IS girls - 2nd 3rd and LE (double numbers) and Deps , who have come from other Avenue Houses after their GE.Thornton A has boys UF ( I think - have lost track somewhat!!) to Deps . In September 2007 the current UF and GE will be spread between the other boys houses (which means there are fewer places for male new Deps that year) , the Deps will, of course move to GRW, and then the girls will split across and build their numbers . I think this is correct anyway!
I remember speaking to Mrs F the year after i left and she was saying they were going to have to put swipes on pod doors because of mixing it up-otherwise it really would be a receipe for diaster having boys and girls that close-we found ways to get round the male/female wing thing-cant imagine what our year group would have been like had we been closer in mixing!

AFAICR there`s only been one year in GRW where we had boys and girls in the same pod- and that was because of the large number of female deps- too many for Ave. houses and Hertford, so several came into GRW and spent their Deps year AND their Grecians year there.
I may be wrong .....and I`m sure someone will correct me if I am..!
At that point movement sensors were installed on the doors outside the girls and boys pods to detect "after hours " movement - and it worked - one poor innocent boy going to the laundry room at some unearthly time was caught!

That really makes me laugh. Like smoking, if teenagers want to have sex they will find somewhere to do it, it doesn't have to be in bed after dark.
Not that the school should make it easy, but MOTION SENSORS!!!

The sexual urge will overcome any form of defences known to man. To be honest, there are some people who may well take it as a personal challenge to beat the security. A bit like joining the mile high club

ahh that was it i knew it had happened! and if i remember correctly it did cause a little bit of mayhem

It sounds almost as if the school got too overly concerned with the idea that nooky might happen. It sounds as if the next step would have been mine fields with trip flares

To be fair, as the school is "in loco parentis" I think it`s right that suitable measures should be taken to reduce the possibility of it, but I can say that those who HAVE been caught out have mostly been found during the day!
I suspect that rather a lot of parents would be more than a little concerned if boys and girls had access to each others room 24/7 with no restrictions whatsoever!

very true, its hard line to call as the school are acting as stand in parents, i used to say that when explaining to people why it was stricter than if we were at home because they have to be our parents!

I find the school's policy both correct and courageous. I think they are very understanding of the needs of the young people and the responsibility that staff have towards their charges. It is almost impossible to get the balance right, and I think CH are very close to having done so. Plaudits all round, I say.

i definatly think that the co-ed grecians houses helped, gave us a bit more independence and experience for the big bad world of uni! which is not as bad as everybody thinks?
