We had the same expression in the Army, but with a slightly different meaning. For example, a squaddie seeing a mate reading Playboy would say "Two's up on that, Bil;" meaning "After you."

These days, the full routine is "quis?" "quid?" "hic" "ego" "dici fine", corresponding to "Who wants this wrapper?" "What junk are you trying to get rid of?" "This actually rather nice chocolate bar, not the wrapper at all, no", "I'll have it", "deal's done, can't give it back".

I don't have the Foundation Hymn as my ringtone (didn't know you could, but now I do know ...!)

I DO have my house numbers as my lottery numbers!

I DO still know the words to the Votum (although I call it the Carmen!) which earned me much respect among my daughter and her friends after a drunken display at a party last year

I have just bought an old OTC cap badge for said daughter, who will probably be unimpressed (that's her with the gun and camo paint in The Blue!)

"Quis cake" drew some very odd looks from non OBs at a wedding last year, particularly when a couple of otherwise respectable looking 'ladies of a certain age' all yelled 'ego' at a considerable volume!

With regard to the apostrophe's (sic), as proofreader for the Old Blue, I would have to say that that is probably more of a trait for Hertford OBs ... (thank you, Miss Hann!)

And I am still better at a hospital corner than anyone else I know, and take an abnormal pride in that talent!

I found The Blue online on the school website today and think I identified the three occasions when GG is pictured. The camo one in the grass with the gun is clearly the winner!
How does one get the Foundation Hymn to play as a ringtone? I have an HP smartphone which is way too smart for me (arrgghh) so I have chosen the 'old fashioned' telephone bell ring as my ringtone. I would much prefer the Foundation Hymn (or even the tune for Carmen/Votum, depending on one's provenance and age!)

1. Get a recording thereof. I prefer the one in CH Celebrates to the version on Music for the Festive Year - the recording's better.
2. Convert it into an MP3. I use iTunes (go to edit - preferences - advanced).
3. Transfer this mp3 to your phone via any of the following: Bluetooth; Infra-Red; Cable. Sometimes you might be able to use a cardreader to do it, but I'm not sure.

Old Age has it's benefits, and one of them is the avoidance of Geekhood, when One does not need it !

I understood point no 1. Hooray! But have no recording.

As for nos 2 and 3, alas, no. But I could learn. Perhaps I could recruit a toddler from the local playschool to explain it?

I'm getting in the swing of "dici fine". Is it "dee-kee" or "dee-chee"?
