Mrs Riches (nb sp) was preceded by Miss Meek who gave the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race cup to Coleridge. Mrs R had a son in one of the Thorntons. I imagine one of Matron's duties was to keep the senior boys' hands off the maids (in which, in one instance in Coleridge) there was a bit of a slip-up.

I'm sure I've referred to this incident before elsewhere. It would have been around 61/62.
A certain Grecian was caught in
flagrante delicto, with one of the European female kitchen staff. Where and by whom they were caught escapes me now. A very attractive lady of Latin appearance who many of us lusted over in our enclosed innocence of youth.
With typical
'Upstairs-Downstairs' justice of the day, said Grecian received a slap on the wrist and the very attractive lady of Latin appearance, disappeared overnight !
'NUFF SAID ?
J.H might be able to comment further.

House-maids were rarely likely to incite adolescent lusts. Mostly they were Sicilian, short, moutachioed and fat. We did have a German au pair in Thornton once, who aroused more interest.
In 1962 there were a pair of kitchen-maid au pairs from Norway (though they were under the direct supervision of Mrs J., the Lady Super). One married a friend of mine, the other a science master.

I can actually go one worse than this, but it was a smidge more recent, and I am famed for my discretion...
In fact, I mention it only to see you on your virtual knees begging for a hint or two!

I haven't been able to kneel for years. I can do the "ever-so-'umble" bit if required, so give with the details!
