I think that Thorn A deserves an award for the most horrid house colours ever- Pink and purple quaters. Truely vulgar.
Thorn B ones are nice though, Red and White quaters with an embroidered Rose in one of the white squares.

Why did Thorn B get a house crest?! We should all have them!
Didn't all the houses once have them?

They did, which is where the rose came from. We got it because when were picking the colours Kev told us he'd been doing a bit of research and found our crest, and there was a general consensus to revive it. All the other houses dont have them because they don't need new house colours.

I think I remember Thorn B having a red rose from my brother's time there. (Michael Scuffil will remember they were there together). I thought my bro said most houses had part of the whole CH crest (but I don't see how you would get enough parts - roses, fleur de lis, sword, St George's cross only gives 4?)

House Colours

1 I thought they were light blue?
2 Vile livid grass green (which I’ve never worn since!!)
3 Orange
4 ??No idea, were they lime green or gold???
5 Purple (am i right in thinking that they had yellow for a while when they couldn’t get purple)
6 Royal blue
7 Shocking pink
8 Bright Red

Or am I mixing up 3s and 7s

Going by ties all yours are right, 4s were silver. If you go by sashes for house matches etc there may be some changes.

I'd completely forgotten sashes, and ties although not so thoroughly, I was thinking about yukky sports socks!!

In which connection, in Half to Remember DRW says that 'Wards' were changed to 'Houses' in 1964. I am not clear that it was at the same time that the Junior Houses were abolished... can't find any reference to that anywhere.

Socks were all brown in our day Kerren, possibly white for school tennis team, which you were. School hockey also had yellow socks, but no coloured house socks.

I would have thought that Wards changed to Houses earlier than 1964 - if it was at the start of the school year that was my UVI year, while I won't swear to it ... I think it was earlier!

I'd reckon that the change from Wards to Houses coincided with the disbanding of the Junior Houses, and I'd agree with you, Katharine - that the changeover was before 1964. I'd guess 1962 or 3, but it's only a guess. I have a photo of 2's netball team when I was 14/15 and it has in it people who ended up in 5's or 1's.
Yes of course it was brown socks for everyday, but I did get to wear white ones quite often and you are right, yellow for hockey teams.

Ba B in the 40s were Red and White hoops I seem to remember the socks were similar, it being Wartime and Clothes Rationing, there were no "Spares" and all the Houses had different colours, Simple Rule : --- If it isn't wearing Red and White
on the Rugby pitch --Tackle it !

I think we went from white cotton socks (all that darning) to house colour nylon ones around 1967. Junior houses were dropped in the summer of '65 as I started.

House colours were worn as sports socks, ties (striped with navy blue up to Vth form - sixth form wore navy and gold ties) and scarves and of course sashes (or belts) for inter-house sports.

I thought there was a veteran's rugby tournament where the over 70's wore purple and were not allowed to be tackled!

Re Tackles -- Note it is the Plural, to avoid mis-interpretation ! I played Rugby in the Army, and at County Level.
I played Rugby, in South Sfrica, up to age 40, and Volleyball to 60, Was Vice President of Wimborne RFC So I think I KNEW the Game , although, with the new Laws about fingers in the shorts of the opposition in the Lineout, and breaking early to arrive at the Flyhalf at the same time (Or slightly previously ) of the Ball. --- (You will gather that I was a Wing Forward ---- Flanker to the newer Player ) Have been an improvement.
At 80, I would not enter the Field, unless Tackling was included -- If you can't stand the Heat ---- !-- Perhaps I am, forever,
a Psychotic, but the satisfying grunt, or moan, from the Tackle--ee, is music to ones ears.
Does Female Rugby evoke the same ? --- Possibly so !

I am not aware that there was any female representation of the glorious game at Hertford (though I stand to be corrected, and indeed in the last 23 years when there have been girls at Horsham, maybe they have had ladies rugby there since the merger). In those far off days we did well enough to field a fiendish cricket team from Hertford, even as long ago as the early 1960's, largely due to the influence of the Headmistress at the time (DR - "Ruth'' - West) who was herself a lady county cricket player, with a passion for the game.. which she carried forward into her retirement, beyond CH.
