I was shocked to learn, donkeys years ago, that my maternal great grandmother ran a 'public house' from her front parlour, in West Wales. Her husband was the local (Chapel) preacher, and there were no 'pubs' as we now know them. They were all private... and domestic...

(I have the family tree on my mothers side, going back to the 1600's. I'm pleased to say that one of my ancestors was a publican in Epsom around 200 years ago. He died of the 'demon-drink' ! That's my kind of ancester !!)
