It was probably a cooler specifically for milk, a bit like those water coolers, but of course you would need to KEEP the milk cool unlike a water cooler which just cools it on the way through.

yes - it was - I remember those coolers! The milk was delivered in a large cube-shaped plastic bag with a sort of hose fitting which you had to cut once it was fitted.englishangel wrote:It was probably a cooler specifically for milk, a bit like those water coolers, but of course you would need to KEEP the milk cool unlike a water cooler which just cools it on the way through.

was it Miss Tucker who taught us beginners latin? I remember learning that FRIG was the origin of the word FRIDGE and pronounced the same - fancy telling teenagers that FRIG (pronounced as written) was an acceptable latin word

I remember they were a nightmare to get the last dregs out - you had to tip the whole bloomin thing over to get anything out!mvgrogan wrote:yes - it was - I remember those coolers! I always thought the term fridge was an abbreviation of the American company name Fridgidaire (sp ?)mvgrogan wrote:J.R. wrote:Shouldn't that be fridge ??

Frig has always had a completely different meaning - Down South, anyway, and I'm not 'going-there' !

I don't remember how they cooled the milk - but I do remember the table in the cloakroom for break, covered in mugs full of [room temperature] milk. I have NEVER, since infancy, been able to stomach milk without barfing - so this was traumatic to me. I believe a trusty group of friends would gather around and duck down to drink mine for me, without being seen. Not sure from whom we were hiding, though! If no one was available to drink it for me, I would back up to the sinks and discreetly (and guiltily) dispose of it.englishangel wrote:It was probably a cooler specifically for milk, a bit like those water coolers, but of course you would need to KEEP the milk cool unlike a water cooler which just cools it on the way through.
In Elementary school, our milk was delivered in those tiny 1/3 pint bottles with silver tops, brought by the milkman. In the Winter, the milk would freeze outside (and the tops would pop up) and the staff would place the crates of milk on the radiators to thaw before break. Bleeaaarrrgh!!

Something like 70% of Chinese/Japanese/Koreans and such are lactose intolerant, and a surprising number of Caucasians as well, so that is probably your problem, Room temp. doesn't help of course.

OMG OMG, thank you - you've just solved a 35 year old mystery - I've always drunk really, really strong black coffee (5 or 6 by espresso in a mug, a dozen times a day) and will actually be ill it if there's even a drop of milk in it - ditto coffee flavoured chocolates, ice cream or anything remotely coffee milky - but I drink really, really weak and milky tea. As soon as I read the above, the foul smell and taste came right back and now I know why I hate milky coffee anythings!!!There was also stewed coffee-with-milk in an urn.

If you are lactose intolerant and drink milk you end up with explosive and extremely unpleasant smelling faeces.englishangel wrote:Something like 70% of Chinese/Japanese/Koreans and such are lactose intolerant, and a surprising number of Caucasians as well, so that is probably your problem, Room temp. doesn't help of course.
Some people can cope with the lactose, but are intolerant of/allergic to the milk proteins, particularly ß-lactoglobulin (which is not, I think, present in human breast milk. Or maybe it is: can't remember) and end up with stomach cramps, blocked sinuses, etc.
I'm in the latter group. Would be given warm milk to drink if I couldn't sleep when I was little: just made things worse. The thought of warm school milk still makes me want to upchuck
