Actually Angela, that is what National Service did, my Dad can iron and sew on a button much better than my Mum can and my father-in-law was the same. My older son was an army cadet and if he wants something done 'properly' he will do it himself. My husband is perfectly capable (except the time I went away and he washed his ties) but of course "you can do it so much better".

I think life for a new kid at CH in the 1950's was very similar to National Service.

We had to replace any missing buttons as soon as they fell off, on pain of punishment if we didn't.

Clean shoes, (unlike today it seems from recent visits to the school !) We'd spit and polish a new pair for a couple of days. This meant keeping them clean far easier in the future.

First and second years - A hair-cut every week !

plus the creases in CCF uniform had to be sharp enough to cut paper; we didn't have irons to do that job with. Amazing what you can do with a CH bed if you put your mind to it.

wow... even if the rules have softened up a bit since the 1950s i'm still going to have trouble doing everything right!
my current school gave up telling me off for my hair colour, they just seemed to accept it... most of my teachers like it anyway so they don't really care!
I have officially decided to change its bright redness now; as of midway through june, i will be going ginger!!

A very popular colour at CH I believe.

Perhaps this is a colour you can get away with at CH - especially if you arrive in a gingered condition! Will your hairdresser be creating the glorious Titian, or will you, with a packet of L'Oreal? Be sure to tell me the colour if so, as I shall enjoy rushing to Boots to check out the vital shade. Exciting!

(I've been unable to find a supply of my blue gel. It must have been discontinued! I miss it. )

well yes, i have pondered the whole ginger thing and how i may get called names, but my theory is (and has been when people have said "urgh you have red hair!" as some sort of insult- to which i reply "yes, well done") if i chose that hair-colour than surely that means i like it and it can't really be an insult... plus i was at work the other day (i have now been promoted to 'fill in saturday girl' you'll be pleased to hear josh) and i spent the wole day in this massive ginger bee-hive wig so i'm thinking the gingerness may be the right route to go down.

as for actually dying it, Angela, i don't think i've ever been to a hairdresser... unless it was free... so over the last two or three years of dying my hair, i have found that Schwartzkopf XXL hair dye is the best, so i may be checking their ginger range out... on the other hand i was in Wilko the other day and there was a lovely looking Garnier one...

Personally I prefer the pink to the blue or outright red, but that is because it goes so much better with my older colouring and Mr Richard round the corner is soooo caring.

That would be Wilko patron saint of students would it Idgie? My daughter reckons that if Wilkinsons don't sell it, it's not worth buying. We even had to pick our Christmas presents out of their catalogue which fell out of the Sunday paper.

i think i would have to agree, all i can say is there better be a wilko in horsham!! i will be rather upset if there isn't.
it would make my life so much easier if there was one in Bighton, but Noooo! i have to wait all week before dad can take to Burgess Hill (a real hole, but has to only wilko near enough) at the weekend so i can do PROPPER shopping! then it's to Lydl for some chocolate rasins and an energy drink!

So far I have never been to one of these ... BUT .. ours is opening in the Summer. They took their time deciding to buy an old co-op which just did not compete when Tescos came to town.

they are fantastic places. You go in for one thing and come out with tonnes of other stuff. And thats this thing-its Stuff, you see it in there think mmmm useful so buy it
