For the first 39 years of his life, he bore his mother's surname of Schicklgruber, being born illegitimate.
No wonder he changed his name !

Sorry, JR. That's a myth.

Another rumour --- during the War, was that his original antecedents were JEWISH -------
Hence my remark about "Oy Vay !"
Of course, Propoganda played a big part in the War --- and it didn't have to be accurate -- as long as it was a "Good Story "
Do you suppose any of the "Sun"s Editors studied at Heidelburg ?????

I think (Wikipedia), you will find that it was Adolf's father Alois, who used his mother's name, not Adolf himself.

Sun's Editors - Study?
That would be a novelty.

I may have the answer to this original thread.
My late father - J.F. Strange - was in Mid A in the 1930s. He told me that a group of German boys came to stay at CH shortly before the war. I am unclear why the Germans were at the school, although it's possible it could have been an exchange visit as my father was taught German at CH.
Some of the German lads stayed in my father's dormitory. His abiding memory of their visit was that at around 6am - way before the CH rising bell was sounded - all of the German boys leapt up from their beds, gathered together and as one shouted 'Sieg Heil!', raising their arms in the familiar salute. Then they proceeded to drill and march around the dorm.
You can imagine that this action was not appreciated by the Mid A boys, who, according to my father, "quickly realized that we were going to have a problem with the Germans in a few years' time."
It would be fascinating to have this story confirmed by one of my father's contemporaries, who might be able shed more light on this extraordinary episode.

Paul,
That looks and sounds right. I was recalling a discussion with Archie, I think at lunch, but certainly over 50 years ago, and he may well have said boys, as opposed to boy. Otherwise, your father's recollections fit.

The story I heard was that in his youth he was befriended by a Jewish family and later took steps to ensure their safety. As you writew "propaganda ............"

Our previous next door neigbours wife, (now sadly deceased) was a member of the HY.
Not unless she'd undergone a sex change, she wasn't. The Hitler Youth was strictly for boys. She was probably a member of the BDM (Bund deutscher Mädel), which was the equivalent for girls. That doesn't make her a Nazi. The resistance heroine Sophie Scholl was a member in her younger days.
So right ! --- and can you imagine refusing to join your appropriate organisation in Nazi Germany ???
I am envious of Michael's ability to use the Umlaut --- I suppose because he lives in Germany, I would have had to type "Maedel"

I don't think you can type symbols direct into an e-mail but if you type the characters first in Word and then cut-and-paste into the Forum it works OK:
ëöü©ÜÄâ¶â¿
and, of course: Mädel

æ ő ð You don't have to use Windows for other symbols - I use Safari on a Mac, and can find all sorts of special symbols! This is without any cut and paste.

ä is on my keyboard by default.
But there's a Microsoft Program you can download called Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator which allows you to re-program your keyboard almost as you like. I have done one or two things with it. On a German keyboard, ' and # are on the same key, and by default, the apostrophe is the shift. As apostrophes are far more used in English, I swapped them round. And as my ancient cast-iron (literally) keyboard doesn't have a Winkey (occasionally useful if your mouse starts playing up) I reprogrammed the Insert key (a dangerous beast anyway) as the Winkey. And I re-programmed the Scroll up key (the one next to Home) to call up the calculator.
