Yes it`s still there but hardly ever used these days - presumably because the Monitors are all in Grecians houses and are free to visit each other they don`t feel the need to have a separate meeting place. AFAIK it was only used for sorting the flowers on Valentine`s Day this year.

They did have a sort of kitchenette by the back entrance to the tuck shop didn't they? I know that Mum always used to get annoyed with the way they left it!

There were six new boys in ThB in 1955, and in 1962/63 four of them were school monitors. (Is this a record?) One was SG (from a base in ThA), one was house captain of Lamb B, one was house captain of ThB, and I was a supernumerary school monitor, a truly splendid position, as it involved no responsibilities whatever.

Curiously, the house captain of ThB had been earmarked as a future SG almost from day 1, but Seaman, in a brave attempt to hold back the tide of the 1960s, decided instead that a sergeant major was in order. This was one reason the latter moved to ThA -- the other being to free up a study for me (this being justifiably considered a First Parting's right).

In 7's in 1965/66 there were six new girls, later joined by another. All seven made it into the upper Sixth (71/72) where all were Monitresses and three were prefects (out of six in the school). Two stayed on into the Senior Sixth to do Oxbridge, one becoming Head girl and the other Deputy Head girl.

I don't remember that Mary - who were they all? Not that I'm doubting you, just don't remember such a star record - although 7's were always reckoned to be the "goody goody" house when I was a junior. I bet when you mention the names, I will remember them, although I'm not always very good at recalling names myself out of thin air.

Yes, I do remember the names, and in fact I was just looking at that photo last night somewhere else on the forum, with a key to all the first names. I could remember many of the surnames, and your list has filled in some of the others. If I recall correctly it was Lois Shepherd-Walwyn though.

For someone who has not a bad memory for names and is a bit obsessive-compulsive about lists, I have a very poor recollection of all the Head Girls (and still less all the prefects) over my time at CH. I remember when I started it was Mina Temple from 3's (who probably left at Christmas), and then, I think, Pat Addison from 4's. After than I'm a bit hazy although I know Judy Evans from 6's was HG sometime and then Julia Cleverdon (2's) the year above me and Karen Dewdney (8's) in my year. Plus the people you have mentioned.

After that, it was Margaret Foxton (6's) the year after I left, then I'm not sure, then Debra Lomas (5's) and then, I think, Becky Cuddeford from 8's. Strange that I remember more of the ones after I left than while I was there.

Incidentally, does anyone have any news of Becky Cuddeford? I didn't really know her at school but later on she moved to the next village to me, we did a holiday job together and she was engaged to a friend of mine (though it didn't last and I lost touch with her after that).

The School Monitors in my day (1984) got some money called Q Shott: As SG I got something like £7 a term. can anyone explain where Q Shott name comes from and of course if there is still a financial advantage in being a school monitor? My money went on beers at the club!!

There were two Shepheard-Walwyns in Mid A during my time. Tim who left in '69 or 70 and Hugh who would have left in about '74 at a guess.

If memory serves me right the family came from Midget's neck of the woods in Devon. Bideford rings a bell but it could have been Barnstaple.

Fulke Walwyn was a famous National Hunt racing trainer.

On my grecians we had a couple of monitors and SG in BaB, and the hockey captain!
(during my couple of year BaB was the girls sporting house!)

One thing i did notice was that some who were made monitors abused their status, managed to find ways out of going back to their avenue house and partaking in house events and marching.

Lois shepherd Walwyn, of course it was, and the two boys at Horsham were her brothers. I think their father was a clergyman though I am not sure where they came from.

Blame Fulke Walwyn on my husband, racing mad he is.

There was also a (several years) younger sister, if I recall correctly, called Rachel, who was in 4's
