Vonny, according to mine, it was presented to me on Boxing Day! I've heard of Easter at school but Christmas???

Re: What price a Leaver's Bible?
I emailed the seller to try to get some clarification about the date. I specifically asked if it was printed in 1908 and this is the reply
Hello,
the Bibles are presented to leavers in a box and Mr Ward got his in 1908 which was lost in the POW camp.
The Governors replaced it with one from the same year as they always had spares, hence the label inside is dated to 1908 and the inscription by way of explanation was added much later in the 1960's by his son.
The Governors Compliments slip dates to 1945.
I hope this helps.
Regards
Chris

Re: What price a Leaver's Bible?
Ho Ho!
I presume the seller is an Old Blue, then, and knows everything....????? How brave of you to contact her/him!What does the box have to do with the edition? Mine (1966) did indeed come in a box, lined with tissue paper, actually, but the box was lost when I had a house fire in 1990 (fortunately the bible inside survived unscathed). I am almost certain that there is no longer a box, anyway.......
So the seller's point is....????

I cannot see why they would have kept them labelled for each year. I'm sure Kerren's earlier idea of job lots bound and embossed all together far more likely. Presumably they would need more than a hundred a year for the two schools.
Ever since I read on here about boxes I have felt deprived that I never had one! (My prayer book does have a slip cover though!)

Re: What price a Leaver's Bible?
Exactly what I thought. He was very circumspect about the dates and I think is chancing his arm. The poor soul doesn't see that the value is in the personal experience of the person who received it .I thought of telling the seller of the POW Bible that I have a King James leather bound Bible and Book of Common Prayer in box with tissue paper. It also has The Charge stuck in it. Ya boo.
I felt a bit sad about the POW Bible hanging around in such an undignified arena. I wonder if the seller is related to the original owner or if he came by it another way. I thought that maybe Mr Ward's family might want to rescue it but I am probably being revoltingly sentimental...

Why doesn't a regular e-bay user contact them direct and ask them why it is blocked in Germany ?
I don't use e-bay, but might glance at it once in a while.

Well no it doesn't, and when I emailed the seller that it was clearly a bible from 1945 I got back "and your point is?"nastymum wrote:I emailed the seller to try to get some clarification about the date. I specifically asked if it was printed in 1908 and this is the reply

I have, and am waiting for an answer. The first answer was to ask me to give more info, so I sent the link at the head of this thread.J.R. wrote:Why doesn't a regular e-bay user contact them direct and ask them why it is blocked in Germany ?

1. This is clearly Horsham
2. Turn of the last century equals about 1990 onwards which ties in with girls being present
3. Specifically dated around 1900 - 1905 when a) there were no girls there and b) when did the school open to pupils?
It certainly looks early 1900's. Various things like the standard of formation of the boys, the ?masters in attendance, the pile of muck on the road and the ?concrete outside the dining hgall suggest that it was shortly after the boys arrived. OTOH the avenue trees outside Coleridge seem pretty well advanced if they had only recently been planted

Re: What price a Leaver's Bible?
I'm still laughing at this one.... sent the vendor a message to say they had got the description wrong by 80 years or so.
And the drums and cymbals providing the beat which propelled the pupils into dinner!
I'm not bidding on it.. it's a fairly well known postcard (in fact there's another, identical, on eBay at the moment, dated to circa 1920) - and yes it is definitely Horsham and sometime between 1901 and 1920, I would guess. So that would give 20 years or so for the trees to develop, David....

Re: What price a Leaver's Bible?
I would say "turn of the last century" implies around 1900 but obviously no girls there then, and 'propelling', makes them sound like pencils.

Re: What price a Leaver's Bible?
I also sent the vendor of the postcard a message and he's now amended his description. The pic must date from before 1921, when the War Memorial (including the lawns in front of the Dining Hall) was created. He's probably right to date it c. 1905.

Re: What price a Leaver's Bible?
Cos it said that the picture clearly showed the girls in front, leading the boys into dinner. And to the left is a drum and cymbals band...propelling the pupils into dinner.
Yes, the vendor, 'Sam', has at least responded to comments!
Hope he/she sells.
