I think you mean GENRE

GENERA is the plural of GENUS which, at least in my business (Evolutionary Biology) is a specific taxonomic group between the level of family and species (come on, you all rememeber the K,P,C,O,F,G,S mnemonics, don't you?).

I suppose you could use genus, but genre seems to be the applied term wrt the arts. Does anyone know the etymology of this word?

Am I right in thinking Christopher Tye was connected with CH, possibly as the first music master in the 1550s?

genre
1770, from Fr. genre "kind, sort, style," from O.Fr. (see gender). Used especially in Fr. for "independent style," as compared to "landscape, historical," etc.

This is from the Dictionary of Etymology and from another source it seems it applies to painting rather than 'the arts' in general.

I sat here last night with dictionaries and thesausrus - I had thought GENRE was the word I needed - but as I am a dippy blonde, decided I might have it's meaning wrong (I mean how many of you call your ironing board a fire engine?) So I slapped it into Word - did the thesaurus - not known..... Hmm, pulled out a Collins Pocket dictionary - (from CH - or at least bought for CH) - not found - but Genus was - and the more I looked into it the more Genus seemed to fit, even though I still thought it was Genre - so any gender, but in the style of the classical musicians - ie John Williams of today, Loyyd Webber, etc...

Take your pick as to Genus, or Genre - we could debate that for a long time - now however it's off to fill in the original list with your additions! Thank you!!
We still need a Y, and a Z (and I know they DO exisit!!!)

genre is the common one when it comes to music styles.

David obviously the mushrooms have had a bad effect on you...... I was trying to make this thread slightly more to the statement of sobriety and knowledge..... and getting people to use their brains from the days when the music master/mistress whanged a cane across the desk to get you to learn the timeline of all composers, and what period they were in - Romantic etc......

i give in..... give up.... going back to bed in a huff....

Ah yes if I recall correctly Bugga & Clea's son was called 'Sod'. Sod was renowned as a bit of a hippy and named his daughter 'Peace'...

.... and I gather she is still alive but, no doubt due to the influence of flower power instilled at an early age by her wayward father, she abandoned the genre altogether. My apologies, Jude, for not sticking to strict classical gender established early in this thread, but I will just mention that this scion of the Orff family is now a pop star in the USA. Her latest hit single is, I believe, called "Why don't you just get outta my life".

I am delighted to say, however, that Jude and her family have classical music on the piano stand in their house, and will no doubt be unaware of the degenerate musical tastes of the younger Orffs. I am not absolutely sure where Peace actually is at the moment. She has, I know, paid brief visits to both Afghanistan and Iraq in recent months, but although the troops welcomed her, her songs were considered subversive by their political masters.

sadly, we may have tons of classical music (and some non) but.....

here is the crunch . I have lost the ability to play the clarinet (mouth too soft) and the piano has managed to play 3 notes at once on several keys.. so if anyone happens to be passing who can tune a piano (preferable not all to the same note) I will then be able to play Beethoven, Brahms and Chopin again!
