It is possible, that the "Slimmed down" bats used by JHopgood et al. were the same ones that we were using in the 40s !!!

Or it may be that this became a standard use for old bats ----- however I think the former is more romantic, and in the CH Ethos !!!

Were you still playing "Ice Hockey" (as described) between Barnes B and Maine A ? or was that banned on the grounds of " 'elf and insanity " ?

Whilst waiting to bat you had to be alert, as soon as the palyer before you was out the bowler continued, i.e you could be bowled out before even picking up a bat and getting to the wicket (dustbin). In fact if the bowler was thinking quick enough a number of players could be bowled out without even appearing on the pitch (it might just have been a Barnes B variation of the rules).

As a couth touch, in Lamb B we used to bring out a couple of those long wooden benches from the dayroom, which served as the pavilion for the batting side. I have been racking my memory to try to recall how we kept the score - or, perhaps, it didn't really matter!
