Tennyson's Birthday Today!

Post by huntertitus »

It is Alfred, Lord Tennyson's 200th birthday today so raise a glass to the great man!

(or at least take Maud for a walk in the garden)

Did you ever hear the divine Joyce Grenfell singing the reply to "Come into the Garden Maude " /

"Maude won't come into the Garden --
What makes you think she would ?
Maude won't come into the Garden --
She HAS read "Red Riding Hood " !

Seriously he was a great Poet -- and not afraid to write "The Charge of the Light Brigade" -- with its criticism of the incompetence of the Commanders !

She was godmother to a great friend of mine who sadly died a couple of weeks ago and apparently was a lovely lady

Never really been a lover of poetry, which probably stems from having to learn verses and verses of poetry, parrot fashion, at CH !

I never really saw the reason for it.

You have to open your romantic side, the same as you need to do to appreciate art

It is possible that your job rather killed that side off

I do have every respect for the boys in blue but they have a terrible job to do

My brother, while researching a novel, decided to spend a few days with the Ipswich police force and the experience totally changed his view of them

And while we are on the subject, when are you going to publish your memoirs, JR?

Tennyson's Birthday

I will not spurn some Tennyson
but, for my taste, some venison
has more poetic menace un-
derneath than rhythms any son
of Somersby could ken. He sung
though thund'ring pen; he sun-
dered soldiers' lives in many hun-
dreds (six, in fact) or anyone
with half a league, and then he won-
dered In Memoriam - he swung
his racket wide at Wimbledon...
...but that's enough. Is tennis on?

Alas JR, I must insist
To tell you of the things you missed
By spurning poetry, you say
That CH caused it, lackaday !
The School has faults -- and not a few
Remember Coleridge was a Blue
And sang of Ancient Mariners, these
include Dave of the 1000 seas --
Or was it Isles -- I can't recall
The scansion of "Policeman's Ball"
But none-the-less, I think you'll find
That Poetry improves the mind !

Oh Dear! Oh dear ! ---- what have we started ?

Memoirs ? Moi ??

I think not ! Too many skeletons and too many cupboards.

A little taster - I did briefly meet a certain Mandy Rice Davies and Miss Keeler when they were ensconced in a 'safe-house' many years ago. The Profumo scandal - Now that WAS good fun.

Back to Poetry. I though Andrew Motions poem for Harry Patch was very good.

All the best memoirs have skeletons in cupboards!

Yes I did see this bit of film
But thanks anyway, I'd have been very keen to see it had I not already done so
I am to photograph Rupert in September for his new book
I hope not too many people on this forum read it, because we were young, wild,
come back to haunt me!
