I have stated my opinion of capital punishment very clearly in the past,

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG in case anyone is in any doubt, and DBTS has been quiet lately, but I bet he is watching.

I did say ONE of the last executions, Mary !

The Padola case was widely covered in the press as it was being used in the cause for the retention of the death penalty for the murder of Policemen and Prison Officers.

The discussion on the return of the death penalty is academic as one of the European Union rules for entry is that the joining country will NEVER BE ALLOWED to exercise their right for the death penalty.

Another reason why I voted NON in the referendum !

I presume I was just lucky enough to pick subjects taught by teachers who didn't fancy Saturday lessons

everyone else on my grecians bar my german and english set has a double first thing and that was it! We had a single 2nd period and single after break!!!!! it was very annoying!

I got a letter from CH today!. well, to be technical my parents did, but hey!. It stated how much we would have to pay roughly and that was fine but at the bottom is stated we needed to pay some money for house funds. What on earth are house funds? can anyone help me with this.

I have honestly no clue at all what 'House Funds' are and am slightly confused why they are not just added into the total cost.

Hi Gemma

Your house parents organise various treats for you - barbecues and the like. These are paid for out of house funds. What exactly it is spent on is at the discretion of the houseparents and not the school. They even existed in my day!

You will also be expected to receive a minimum pocket money allowance which, at least in the Avenue houses, is usually given to the houseparents who act as a sort of bank for you. I believe the minimum (all Jonathan ever gets) is Â£20 per term. This gives you some cash to spend in the tuckshop (where you will find the kindly Mrs C) and occasional trips into Horsham.

Jonathan says going to Horsham by train with a railcard is much cheaper than using the bus.

House funds are not added to the total cost for precisely the reason DBTS points out - that they are used by the houseparents as they deem fit, be it food, cinema trips, competition prizes, etc etc.

A lot of the seniors don`t seem to bother with pocket money - they just rely on getting to town if they need cash, but in my opinion it`s a good idea to keep a small amount "banked" in house, as throughout the year there are several occasions when money can be directly debited from your pocket money account - e.g. own clothes day, Remembrance Day Poppies, Valentine`s Day etc. It`s also helpful if you need cash but can`t get into Horsham.

you do get some good things from the house funds, at christmas on my deps we all got take away and on our Greicans in Grecians West we got bbq's loads and all sorts of things like hiring of karakoe machines etc.

As for money, i never kept any with houesparents-but then having my dad being a teahcer therefore Mum just down road i had the bank of parents on tap!Otherwise just had a bank account in town where all my earnings from hols went and kept it all there

Ah, so thats what it is for. Looking at it we just seemed really confused but now that it has been explained it makes alot of sense. Hmm. I think my parents will probably pay the minimum pocket money but put some in my account or give it to me 'cash in hand'. I realise that isn't as safe as I would like but after 5 years of financial independence in forms of always looking after my own money, I prefer to be able to hold the notes or coins and have it immediately free to hand.

On another note I had the wierdest dream about ch last night, really random about dale winton being a house master and my bedroom was actualy a locker. Really weird, I'm just glad the actual place is nothing like that.

House funds never used to be much, i think I used to pay Â£10 a term, or was it a year?

Well, they asked for Â£45 and 20 of that is pocket money so im pretty sure the house funds are Â£25. Seems pretty reasonable to me per term. It's not like they are asking for that every month or something. Then again, if you're paying quite a bit in school fees that does come as a punch in the gut. Could seem like they are just cheekily asking for more money.
