Ajaz Karim on trial at Hove Crown Court

Ajaz Karim who coached sport at CH in the 1980s and 90s has gone on trial today at Hove Crown Court.

The claimant is an Old Blue and Judge Jeremy Gold is presiding.

The trial continues tomorrow.

Back inside he goes. He attended for a voluntary interview so that may explain the lack of a custody photo, although maybe the press will attend for his sentencing. He had aged really badly I thought even back in 2018.

21months with another charge being held on the books. He hopes to be out after 11 months! Sorry but I am of the "severe" mentality - he should be made to serve the rest of his earlier sentence and the entire 21 months this time. That said I would prefer a massively harsher sentence because he was acting against a young child who could not protect herself against an adult who was placed in authority over her..

Did you have to leave your letters open? We did, we had letter writing on a Sunday when we were all supposed to write home. We then left the letters in their envelopes before they were posted the following day. I don’t have any memories of incoming post being read.

When in Prep B I don't recall our letters being read. Which I suppose was quite generous of Mr Pink who might well have discovered someone writing: "Dear Mum and Dad, Mr Pink tried to put his hand up my shorts yesterday". In the end no-one divulged such contentious information until Summer term 1955. Which tells you much about how dodging lecherous masters was considered part of the obstacle course that is the British boarding school.

I never disclosed my initial unhappiness (which in my case didn't involve being groped but was simply part of being pitched into this overwhelming, cold, spartan, loveless environment) because I knew that it would upset my parents who had set so much store by getting me into a boarding school. I concentrated on anodyne events like minor academic achievements (mostly minor in my case) or house sporting events, or indeed any vaguely unusual or amusing event that seemed to stand out from our monastic life. The more I read of the psychotherapist Nick Duffell's books on these matters the more I understand my reactions and behaviour back then - and indeed in subsequent years.

I was actually referring to inward mail to a member of this group from a female who apparently used very hot and rather direct and detailed language! I suspect, from what I heard from him, that she, as an authoress, would have done well in the hidden literature market.

It was post to that pupil that Kit was interested in. In Prep A letters out were left unsealed but in the upper we sealed them in Col A.

Karim won his appeal so his sentence has been reduced from 21 to 15 months because not enough weight was given to his previous sentence for similiar offences.

IMHO for equal acts the punishment should be the same or worse. What really is the reason for prison sentences? hell or luxury with freebies. The fact that there was a previous sentence for a similar offence should not reduce the punishment for a different but presumably identical offence.

Had he been sentenced for all matters in one go, he wouldn’t have got another 21 months for this offence.

How unfortunate. If he wanted to reduce his prison time he could have asked for other offences to be taken into consideration and pleaded guilty at the first trial
