I'm having a senior moment and can't remember her at all! The really excellent swimmers I remember were from 8s, Elizabeth Onley and Delphine Palmer.seajayuu wrote:Ditteke Wheeler. Excellent swimmer.
Hmm Delphine, did her parents groom her to be a dolphin?

Ditteke! That really is unusual!
I can remember a senior Mina (Temple, was it?) in 3's when I was a new girl. I just thought it must be Wilhelmina. Bur Melissina is delightful. I was forgetting my peer, Janessa. Her parents made the name up - one wanted Janet and the other had chosen Vanessa. It seemed just amazing at the time that parents would make up a name! Funny... considering nowadays.... the other older Fletcher sister was Linden.
I hope Melassina made use of such an elegant name in later life! I bet DR was stumped by "D'Este"!
I think I was the only Angela? Funny... it was quite popular in the Fifties, but I've only ever met one Angela younger than I? Hold on - there was Angela Hayward, a few years ahead of me.

During my time in Sixes there were girls called Honor, Joy and Felicity; there were often smiles of amusement during prayers when we used a prayer for the Queen asking that she be granted 'everlasting joy and felicity'!

(I am sure I have already posted this somewhere on here!) During my daughters' era there was only one Mary in the school - and she was really Mary-Rose - which seems unusual. There were two Marias - mine being one of them and the other Maria Ntuk-idem (not sure about spelling) who I remember as a very attractive coffee-coloured young lady, the product of a very black Nigerian father and a very pale Scandinavian mother, each of whom had the pronounced features of their own nationality, but the combination in their daughter was quite beautiful. I do hope nobody will find that offensive!

There was another Angela in my time, 1 year younger than me Angela Allen in 6's. Another rare name Lavina Minett.

Well I know I have said so before, but, as a new girl, I thought that "Kerren" was actually "Karen" but pronounced in the accents of my new school.
Eventually, I saw Kerren's name written on the Sports Notice Board in the Cloisters. Aha!

Re: Quick questions and (maybe) answers Hertford Memories th
I have met 3 or 4 Angelas, now intheir forties or early 50's. Off the top my head, I can list at least a dozen Susans from Hertford, and Jane was very popular, also Sarah. Nowadays names such as Lily and Ruby are back in fashion, they would have seemed old fashioned then.Angela Woodford wrote:A sudden explanation for something I'd always remembered and about which I'd wondered!
My computer always gives me a Yahoo page for starters. There was a thing about new babies being named after this year's Olympic athletes. "We must call him Usain!"
There were so many Susans about my age at CH. Three Susans and a Sue in my form alone! What could have led to all those Susans in the Fifties? It wasn't a name that had been popular before, was it? Now I've just read that there was a sensation when a Hungarian athlete called Susan Halter swam splendidly in the 1948 Olympics, causing an initial rush by 62,000 new parents to call their baby girl Susan.
But never before had I met so many Judiths as I did at school. I wonder why Judith?
