Vaughan Williams

Post by DavidRawlins »

Today, 14th Dec, in Choral Evensong from Worksop college, the canticles (Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) were composed by Vaughan Williams in 1938 for CH. Lang, as Director of Music was also mentioned. It was on radio3 and can be heard on the internet. It will be repeated on Sunday afternoon. I cannot remember them being sung in my time, though I may well be wrong.

Ralph Vaughan Williams lived at Leith Hill Place near Dorking (not very far from CH). There is a statue of him in Dorking town centre.

Immediately outside Dorking Halls.

In the 70's, I worked alongside his retired chauffeur. Some very interesting tales !!

Corks always used to warn students who were to be examined by him not to look at his feet. Apparently his shoes were enormous, and candidates would look at them rather than tackle the question.

Do I remember that one of the stained glass windows of the chapel at Hertford was dedicated to Vaughn Williams, the one above the main back entrance??

Sadly his baton has been stolen and replaced several times, and is now no more !
