Today's Independent.

They've got every right to hold an Islamic march anywhere they like. It's a free country! But I feel it's ghastly to hold the march in Wootton Bassett, where the townspeople demonstrate their quiet respect for our fallen soldiers.

I hope nobody turns up.
That does not apply to the BNP and likeminded people so why Islamic marchers?

The authorities frequently stop the BNP marching in certain parts of London so why don't the same rules apply in this case?

Please note, for the avoidance of doubt, that I find the BNP a repugnant organisation but this kind of stuff is gift wrapped for them.

The Police have a right (Duty) to prevent any Assembly or Demonstration, which may result in Public Disorder.

I Imagine that this will be the case.
This, obviously, will give the Islamic organisation the publicity which they want, but as is usually the case -----The Police can't win !!

You can just hear Rita Chat of "Liberty" sounding off --- !

An interesting and encouraging link as ever - thank you Alan!

When this thread first started, I fear I approached apoplexy !!!

However, after the last few Posts, I am beginning to see the interesting, and sometimes amusing, side of it !

The gentleman in question is such an awful Prat (Will that be edited ? -- I hope not !) he is his own worst enemy and the more he struts, the more he exhibits this quality of "Prattiness" !!!!

Accordsing to Sky News this morning France vhas banned the use of the Muslim face veil in public. The fine (according to them) is £700 but if the use of the veil is enforced (perhaps by a husband) then the fine is doubled.

Thgink what you will.
What happens if a politician drowns in a river? That is pollution.
What happens if all of them drown? That is solution!!!

What WE should do, is line the pavements as they march, and stand quietly with our backs turned.

I'm sure they AND the worlds press would get the message.
If this march ever went ahead I think JR's idea would be an excellent response. If the streets of Wootton Bassett were lined in the dignified and respectful manner of the funerals it would be a fantastic slap in the face for any demonstrators ( it would take a lot of discipline when the natural urge would be to respond in a more physical or verbal manner).

To return to the origins of this thread I think this was, and still is, a briliant idea, not just for those in Afghanistan but also those lost in Iraq. I am not, was not, am not married to nor am I related to a serving soldier but I know that many on this thread were and I do, however, as Angela knows, I work with newish recruit soldiers in the Royal Engineers and sadly RE have been at the forefront of losses as they provide signallers and support to many serving regiments.

The fourth plinth seems like a perfect place to me to show our respect for the armed forces continuing service and bravery, they deserve at least that whether you agree with what they are doing and where they are doing it or not.

History tells us that attitudes, sometimes, do not change ----
I make no apology for giving you a taste of this-- it has often brought a tear to my eye --

"TOMMY" -- by Rudyard Kipling
I went into a public' 'ouse to get a pint o' beer
The publican 'e ups an sez "We serve no recoats here"
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an'giggled fit to die
I outs into the street again an' to myself says I
O its Tommy this a'n Tommy that, an' Tommy go away ;
But its "Thank you Mister Atkins" when the band begins to play
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play
O its "Thank you Mister Atkins" when the band begins to play

"Yes makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers, when they're goin large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then its "Tommy this an' Tommy that an' Tommy 'ows yer soul ?"
But its "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the guns begin to roll----
The guns begin to roll my boys, the guns begin to roll
O its "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the guns begin to roll !

You talk o' better food for us an' schools an' fire an'all
We'll wait for extry rations, if you treat us rational
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldierman's disgrace
For its "Tommy this an' Tommy that " an' "Chuck 'im out the brute ! "
But its "Saviour of 'is Country" when the guns begin to shoot ;
An' its "Tommy this an' Tommy that an' anything you please ----
An Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool --- you bet that Tommy sees !

I have spared you all of it -- read it for yourself -- but a couple more of the stanzas are good

Its "Tommy this an' Tommy that" an "Tommy wait outside"
But its "Special Train for Atkins" when the Troopship's on the Tide

While its "Tommy this " an' Tommy that" an "Tommy fall be'ind"
But its "Please to walk in front Sir" when there's trouble in the Wind !

It is interesting to substitute lack of the best Equipment, or Clothing, or Protection for Kiplings points ------

But then I confess to being biased !!!

And now his organisation has been banned. Any ideas on what he will call it now?

Louis Theroux made a documentary about the Phelps family - it was shown on BBC2 a few years ago. Ghastly mob, but America does seem to have more than its fair share of self-appointed preachers.
